Had my intro to curling class and it was so much fun, definitely found a new hobby. It was way more physically demanding than I realized, particularly in muscle areas my physical therapy addresses (is this good?).

Got my tickets for Wildwood, only a month early. At a McMenamin's for extra Portlanditude. Thank you to all the folks who moved things ever so slightly for months on end to make this film happen.
Process image from the making of Wildwood. A large open set. An animator sprinkles something on the miniature wood set. A puppet of the main character is seen from behind towards the left. A camera is behind the animator (you can see their back on the screen on the far left). Someone in the background has a ladder.

There's a really inappropriate joke that I'm working really hard on not posting here and I just want you all to appreciate my restraint, and no I won't elaborate because I don't want to be one of those people who post "well I could've said X but I didn't" (you just did mate)

Various Wildwood Crows spotted around Portland today. Unlike a couple of years ago with the cats, the website doesn't list all of the Crows and all of the artists. Instead you need to download an app which isn't free (so two ways I'm not getting it). So I'm not able to credit the artists here.

just had some quick service done on the car at the Jiffy Lube on Beaverton Hillsdale Highway and one of the mechanics had multiple Nazi tattoos... so I don't think I'll be stopping there again.

I grew up exposed to multiple accents just in my community, let alone ones from travel and summer camp. I kinda use bitsa alladem. I'll add eh, no or yo to the end of sentences (the latter less since leaving NY) consistent w/dialects, but inconsistently to myself.

Starbucks Workers United @sbworkersunited.org · 25/08/2026
🚨BREAKING: Our union of over 12,000 baristas are officially calling for a Starbucks boycott. Read this statement penned by Starbucks workers on why a boycott from ALL customers, allies, and organizations is necessary to fight back against corporate greed:
BOYCOTT STARBUCKS is written inside a zig-zaggy speech bubble against crumbled paper. Beside it are the Starbucks Workers United logo and an image of a coffee cup being poured out.We, the 12,000 and growing members of Starbucks Workers United, call on everyone who stands with working people to boycott Starbucks until they finalize a contract with union baristas and stop union-busting.
What we’re fighting for is simple: a minimum $17/hr wage, enough hours to live on, better staffing in our stores, and basic workplace protections. Every year, our living costs rise but our wages don’t keep up – a growing pressure many American workers are feeling as corporate greed accelerates unchecked in our country.
Starbucks is banking on customers' blind loyalty to the integrity and values this company once stood for in order to keep squeezing them for profits. At a time when working-class people across the country are struggling in a challenging economy, it is no longer possible to be both a Starbucks customer and in support of workers; choosing to spend money at Starbucks is choosing a law breaking corporation over the baristas who make your coffee everyday exactly as you ask for it.
Starbucks has violated U.S. labor law more than any other company in modern history–the NLRB and its judges have found that Starbucks committed hundreds of labor violations and there are currently more than 550 unresolved unfair labor practice charges still pending against the company. Instead of finalizing a fair and reasonable union contract, Starbucks has repeatedly demonstrated a lack of care for the workers who fuel the company’s profits by wasting millions of dollars on AI and technology that doesn’t work, launching countless gimmicky drinks designed to distract from real problems, and inventing pointless policies that do nothing but make our jobs harder.
This ongoing, irrational behavior by Starbucks and its refusal to settle a fair union contract with workers leaves us with no other choice than to call for a boycott. We know when working people stand up together, we win.
No Contract? No Coffee.

my musical loving child picked The Greatest Showman for our family movie night. I'm not going to comment on the movie itself, but I am going to wonder when someone is going to do a biopic of Tom Thumb, a less heralded and more interesting story.

I don't agree with everything that Mark Carney does, but I'm consistently impressed with how he seems to be the only (friendly) world leader willing to robustly stand up to Trump's bullshit. I'd be rooting for him even if I had no ties to Canada.

Highlight from drive home: I pulled into a truck stop to charge the car a bit and use the rest room. Kids asked for seltzer. The closest I could find was tall boys of Liquid Death. Spouse was convinced I just gave the kids beer until she read the label. (unsurprisingly, the gothling loved the can).

Took a trip to Crater Lake on our way to Ashland, OR. This did not go so well thanks to wildfire. Air was unhealthy at Crater Lake, so no walks, but also you couldn't see across the crater. Ashland was so bad we left two days early because it was even smoky inside and we were feeling sick.

After deciding that I needed to take on a new challenge, I signed up for ice skating classes. I made it through one half of a class, which is honestly not as bad as I feared. I clearly have a balance deficit. I'm gonna figure out how to work on that and try to get back out on the ice.

thanks again to @jennykwan.bsky.social for beating the drum on this in Parliament. IRCC needs to handle the citizenship part of its mandate better. My file's been marked "urgent" for ~1 year and my application is simple (G-2 with all certified birth records). But lately, nobody's getting processed.

Why does it seem like the people most likely to decry an "argument from authority" as a fallacy are the most likely to insist that their argument is authoritative? This is a rhetorical question, you don't need to answer it.
