Long hiatus, I’m (kind of) back. A fellow faculty member in my department surprised me with a 3D print of a press 🥹 #printsky #printmaking

Here’s my big three today: #academicchatter
A photo of three beverages in containers on a wooden table. A white water bottle (owala) is in the back, a neon yellow coffee tumbler is to its left, and a mini Coke Zero can is in the front.

Yesterday @gbmfg.bsky.social and I finished printing the second color for our RRK Student Summer Residency Open House! It was a fun, quick run! We printed on the newest addition to the design lab fleet: a new style 8x10 C&P. #printsky #letterpressprinting #academicsky
A photo of a stack of white paper with the words “OPEN HOUSE” printed in a cornflower blue. The letters have alternating baselines. There are printers marks in the corners of the paper. In the background is a jobber printing press that is out of focus.

The attempt to anthropomorphize artificial intelligence isn’t getting us anywhere. Interpersonal relationships and human connection through community is inherent to our nature. Let students learn from those who love the art of teaching, not bots. #academicchatter #academicsky
Most Al research for math education recently has focused on tutoring students. The idea is that students would learn better with a one-on-one tutor.
Foster doesn't think that is the right approach.
Students bond with teachers, not Al, he said.
"I see the act of teaching as such a human endeavor," he said. "I see teaching as an inquiry and a science and an art."

This surveillance AI is perverse & oppressive. Is there genuine need or are we throwing spaghetti at the wall here? Also, gonna go out on a limb—the author is making a sweeping generalization re: the “teacher” in question. Can we stop policing women’s bodies? #academicsky #academicchatter
"See if we notice any subtle changes in their practice," he said.
The Al might tell a teacher to "move around and monitor and check in on their progress more" during group work, he said.
"Is she making those small adjustments in her practice that could become big?" he said.”

With highlights on “their”, “a teacher”, “she” and “her practice”.

OUTDATED??? 😭😭😭
Meanwhile the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages is reintroducing closed-book, handwritten exams - despite students objecting to being tested on what they call "outdated skills like memorisation"

Passive conduits. That’s what students who are using gen ai/ai to do their work are. As well as people outside of academia.
Students' ability to acquire these skills is dependent on higher education's capacity to guard against the worst excesses of Al, according to Dr Michael Veale, associate prof and vice-dean of UCL Faculty of Laws.

"Thinking requires foundational knowledge," he says. "Students who learn primarily to act as passive conduits for Al-produced information are not going to reach the potential they have to use the tool well, let alone the much broader potential they have as independent thinkers."

Veale cites the many studies that indicate educational benefits of handwriting over typing and asks if there are parallel losses in educational benefits to students who, for instance, do not summarise material themselves but let ChatGPT do it.

I could faint…92%?????? May these students never find me as their instructor 🫠
“Undergraduate dependence on Al is endemic. Almost all students - 92 per cent - are using it in some capacity, up from 66 per cent in 2024, a survey of more than 10,000 students conducted earlier this year by the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI), a leading think tank focused on higher education policy, found.”

A meme from the Office. The image is split in half with one screenshot with yellow subtitles that read, “Corporate needs you to find the differences between this picture and this picture.”, with two hands holding photoshopped images of the life alert device and actress from the tv ads, and the proposed OpenAI wearable device. The bottom screenshot is a still of Pam wearing a collared shirt and a mauve cardigan and the subtitles read, “they’re the same picture.”

(1/3) Central Texas/Fredericksburg: folks if you’re not evacuating due to the Crabapple Fire (up to 8,640 acres from 400 - TAMU Forest Service) & are having trouble with wildfire smoke, here’s instructions [with alt] on how to build a Corsi-Rosenthal Box: #centraltexas #wildfiresmoke #texas
HOW TO BUILD A CORSI-ROSENTHAL BOX

The Corsi-Rosenthal Box is an affordable DIY air-cleaning system made with simple materials found in hardware stores. The box fan pulls air through the filters on the sides and blows out clean air. It is proven to reduce indoor exposure to airborne particles including those containing the virus that causes COVID-19. The box can also decrease the levels of other particles in the air, such as dust or wildfire smoke.
• Filters can last up to a year
• Keep away from walls and corners
(First Illustration by Amanda Hu)

THE MATERIALS

THE CUBE
• Filters 3M 1900 MPR (20" x 20" x 1" or 20" x 25" x 1") or MERV 13 (20" x 20" x
2" or 20" x 20" x 1" or 20" x 25" x 2" or
20" x 25" x 1" [2-inch preferred])
• Lasko or Mainstays 20-inch Box Fan
• Scissors, Utility Knife, Duct Tape
• Arrange the filters to create a symmetrical structure
• Ensure the arrows are pointing inwards
• Duct tape the four edges
• Vertical orientation of the pleats is preferred

THE BASE
• Use one side of the fan's cardboard box
• Cut the cardboard to fit the base of the cube.
• Duct tape it on all four sides

THE FAN
• Place the fan on top of the cube
• Seal all sides, including corners
• Ensure any holes on the side of the fan are sealed off with duct tape

THE SHROUD
• Cut the other cardboard sheet to fit the top of the fan
• Cut a circular hole (15.75" diameter)
• Place the shroud on the fan and tape it on all four sides
• The shroud increases efficiency and decreases the noise level
