New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment. www.nber.org/papers/w35854
Taxing Entrepreneurial Wealth: Evidence from
Norway, 2021-2025
Marius A. K. Ring
WORKING PAPER 35854|
DOl 10.3386/w35854
ISSUE DATE October 2026
Whether imposing higher taxes on business owners adversely affects business activity by constraining investment and inducing capitalist flight is a central question in the ongoing debate on how to tax the ultra wealthy. To shed new light, I exploit a series of related Norwegian reforms during 2021-2024 that increased dividend tax rates, removed migration-related capital gains tax loopholes, and nearly doubled the effective marginal tax rate on business wealth. These reforms spurred international debate and, allegedly, an "exodus" of Norwegian billionaires (Financial Times,
2023). While I document clear effects on migration, these responses are concentrated among the top 0.1% of the wealth distribution and mostly confined to 2022 and 2023. My results indicate that at most 100 individuals left due to the reforms. I find no evidence of significant outmigration or reduced inflows of startup founders or inventors. I estimate that absent any outmigration, wealth tax revenues would have increased by 75% from 2021 to 2024. Reform-driven outmigration lowers the revenue gain to 71.5%. My findings further show that outmigrating owners' firms remain economically active and do not reduce investment. In a broader set of analyses, I examine whether business outcomes are affected, regardless of whether owners outmigrate, since firms may reduce investment both due to liquidity constraints or distortions to owners' savings decisions. I compare firms owned by Norwegian individuals subject to the wealth tax with firms owned by foreigners and other tax-exempt entities. By merging historical ownership data from Orbis with the Norwegian shareholder register, I perform these analyses on both Norwegian and foreign-domiciled firms.
Across settings, I find no evidence that Norwegian-owned firms pay out more dividends or invest less after the reforms,…

But I am a bit confused as to why he considered that important enough to include. For those less obsessed than me, Negrín was the much, though mostly unfairly, maligned PM of republican Spain for most of the civil war.

Reading a Spanish biography of Juan Negrin because I am obsessed with the Spanish civil war, and I now know that the research lab he directed after returning from Germany to Spain during WW1 was 57 m long and 10 m wide. Can’t say I’m angry with the author for obligating me to mentally decipher that

I suppose a Palestinian state is more likely with an Eizenkot government, but IMO the difference is marginal and mostly based on external factors (international pressure and effective Palestinian resistance.)

Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
I think that’s fair to some extent, but I think it’s more tribal reasoning (I’m a rightwinger, therefore I support Netanyahu) than policy based (I oppose a Palestinian state, therefore I support Netanyahu.)
100
Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
IMV the real question is why do so many in the anti-Netanyahu camp (which I suppose you could argue is also right wing) also oppose a 2SS.

Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Her article is about the legitimacy of fearing a Palestinian state, but for some reason asks “why do these decent people have reservations about someone like Gadi Eizenkot,” who has very clearly opposes a Palestinian state.

Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
In practical terms, yes I agree. The focus has to be on ending the occupation. The debate on Zionism is basically theoretical for me, and probably more interesting than it should be.

Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
More seriously, if you’re speaking out against Israel’s ongoing atrocities and also feel offended by Mamdani’s statement, that’s fine. But I don’t have time for people who only have thoughts on the statement, which let’s be honest, will not have a material impact on anyone’s life.
120
Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Well isn’t pushback predictable with basically everything Mamdani does (or says?) :)
100
Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Ofc both of these things could change, theoretically. But right now the chances are looking pretty slim.

Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
I think this is fair, my issues with Zionism are 1. Skepticism it can ever become truly benign, given the enormous potential for continual conflict with the Palestinians which was evident from the beginning, and 2. The in-group can only be joined by birth or religious conversion.

Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
The war would most likely have ended sooner which ofc would have helped. But there’s little to reason to think it would have been conducted differently while it lasted. After Oct 7 even Yair Golan was talking about starving Gazans to death.
000
Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Sure, though there were around 50x more Palestinian civilians killed. Tbc I don’t think Mamdani is above criticism. I just don’t really understand getting upset about his statement given the variety of terrible things Israel is still doing.

Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Not sure there is any argument (on any topic) that manages to be both as annoying and morally despicable as this one.

I mention liberal Zionists because I don’t expect to have any common ground with the non-liberal variety.

Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Having a a tough time with liberal Zionists’ criticism of Mamdani’s Oct. 7 statement. Israel is still attacking Gaza daily and conducting ethnic cleansing in both the WB and Lebanon. If your issue is with Mamdani’s statement rather than that I think your priorities are seriously misplaced.

OK, too much nonsense in my feed, need to stop ignoring briefly If this 👇 offended you please slap yourselves in the face, dowse with cold water, whatever, get a grip. This is perfectly crafted and if you think otherwise it's because you forgot that there are other people this relates to.

Sure there are some pretty terrible Dems but I don’t really think the situation is comparable. Eizenkot is attacking Netanyahu for supporting a 2SS and negotiating with Balad, Dems aren’t attacking Trump for being too weak on deportation. Also v large differences at the popular level.

Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Well one difference is that the Israeli opposition may object to Smotrich’s language here but really has no problem with the policies he is describing.
100
Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Lot of the issues here understandably don’t get much outside attention given the horrors being perpetuated in the WB and Gaza.

Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Not sure quite what you mean by 1990s liberal vision, but I think even returning to the situation under Rabin (if that was the intention) would leave Israel as something of an outlier in the western world in terms of its treatment of indigenous population.
100
Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
But the latter option is just Zionism in name only.
000
Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
IMV the only way to do this while still retaining a version of Zionism with actual content would be some sort of binational state. (A pipe dream at present.) Ofc it’s also possible to define Zionism down to make it basically meaningless, and achieve full equality that way.
100
Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I don’t think there is any public evidence of Eizenkot ever supporting a 2SS (meaning something clear and unambiguous, not separation or maintaining a Jewish majority.) Happy to be proven wrong.
000
Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Yes I think Zionism is pretty clearly belief in a political regime based on Jewish domination of the state of Israel. Ofc there are more and less liberal versions of this view, but all are based on an idea of the state as first and foremost aiming to advance Jewish interests.

Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Yes I’ve seen that. But was disappointed to learn that both Radman and Lazimi both supported it. (Not the first time I’ve been disappointed by Lazimi recently, tbh.)

Terrible decision both morally and politically. At this point only hope that Golan doesn’t hang on too long after the elections.

Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Do think it’s important to note that electoral support for parties in favor of a 2SS was nearly always lower (if not much lower) than declared support for a 2SS. So I think those numbers should be taken with something of a grain of salt.

In my view, it is far more useful and urgent to get people to recognise the profound injustice caused by Zionism, than to argue whether the original ideology had any redeeming or liberatory aspects. Does arguing about 19th century Jewish politics helps us to stop genocide? I don't think so. 4/

Plenty of Europeans were fleeing various forms of persecution, if not to the level of the holocaust (most famously the pilgrims.) In any case if you accept that local populations should not be displaced, the motives for the displacement are not relevant.

Not too different from accepting that European colonization of the Americas was wrong but that demanding that white Americans, Canadians, etc. go back to Europe is insane.

Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I would go even further and say it’s possible to hold that enabling mass Aliya over the wishes of the majority of local inhabitants was wrong but that the 7 mn+ Israeli Jews aren’t going anywhere.
200
Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Possibly a niche view, but it is possible to hold that the idea of a Jewish state (central to Zionism for at least the last 80 years) is inherently discriminatory but that Israeli Jews have the right to remain in their homes.
100
Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Also in that there is no real possible civic version of Zionism (compared to Irish civic nationalism, for ex.) Of course Israeli civic nationalism is theoretically possible, but Zionism is by definition opposed to that. Either you are born to/convert into the in group, or you’re an outsider.

Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Not sure what point you’re trying to make. I already said I don’t agree with that and obviously if the Palestinian leadership were to adopt that demand no agreement will be possible.

If I were British and a GPEW member I wouldn’t even support the motion (mostly to avoid alienating UK Jews and bc I think opposing the occupation is much more worthwhile than opposing Zionism.) But I do think both as originally conceived and as practiced by the state of Israel, Zionism is racist.
010
Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I’m not in any way connected to the motion? Tbc I don’t support the “Algerian solution” and think calling for it should be beyond the pale. That said, I am also against ethnonationalism whether practiced by Jewish people or anyone else, and don’t think it’s possible to separate it from racism.
210
Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Exactly, discussion of Jews’ “historic home” is mostly a question of historical fact. Totally possible to think Jews’ “historic home” was I/P without thinking it was right to establish a Jewish state there in the first half of the 20th century or that Israel should remain a Jewish state today.

You’re probably right about Deri but as is I think the court has been looking to avoid a head on coalition with Bibi. A couple more friendly appointments and I think he could’ve expected a fairly reasonable accommodation, even if not a total or immediate cancellation of the cases against him.
010
Ryan @thepeis.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Yes this romanticization of the court totally ignores how far to the right it has moved in recent years. Also shows the coalition’s own goals would have been better served by trying to reinforce that shift rather than insisting on its quite unpopular judicial “reforms.”
