I find the flaws in this series are also much easier to explain than the reasons to love it. My favorite part is the found family sibling dynamic between the mc and a woman who turns herself into a cowcatcher?? IDK

Legit! It’s the sort of series I want to see lovingly picked apart by a WisCon panel, because the flaws are more interesting in context. Like how the big titty crab lady’s tits are part of a costume she wears for an audience that values extreme displays over authenticity, in a capitalist hellscape

(Yes this is partly about Dungeon Crawler Carl, which I’ve inhaled completely over the past month and a half and love. The cishettery of it all sticks out like a Slap Chopped thumb in a story that’s explosively imaginative in so many other ways.)

“He or she” is your intergalactic linguistic standard? Only one alien species has a third gender, and it’s a joke? Burying your only space gays? DON’T MAKE ME GET THE SPRAY BOTTLE, MATTHEW

Sci-fi written by cishet authors can be so jarring. Like you’re telling me you dreamt up a whole universe of aliens, but every species has separate bathrooms for men and women? The sentient ooze is a lady ooze? The spacefaring tentacle monarch is in a heterosexual marriage? Okay Matt.

Dolly Parton was not a billionaire, because multi-millionaires who are good people like her never get past that last finish line. Not when there are kids who need books to read and sick people who need vaccines.

Dolly Parton was, frankly, why red states should not be abandoned to the fascism of their government and the destitution of said government's economic choices. Her father's name was Robert Lee for fuck's sake, and yet look at the good she chose to add to the world.

POV: You’re walking up the stairs in my house when you hear the faint melody of wind and circus music echoing through an empty head
The view from below as a tuxedo cat named Chad lounges atop the half-wall that boxes in our stairwell. His body is curved awkwardly to fit around a corner, his cheek mushed against the railing and one leg dangling down the wall, as if he’s melted under the light from the solar tube in the ceiling.

This is his new favorite spot in the house.

Katydids keep gathering in the space between our window panes, so I made it a disco
A small calico cat named Zelda perched atop a cat tree next to a window with a window AC unit installed. She’s watching bugs in the space between the overlapping window panes.A closer look at the space between the window panes, which has been decorated (on the inside of the window) with a tiny disco ball charm, glittery washi tape, a watercolor illustration of a bar with a katydid bartender, and a sign reading “Katydid club. Open all night, pants optional.” A katydid is standing between the panes of glass, positioned like he’s approaching the bar.A close-up of the bar. It has 3 stools, a backlit shelf of bottles, and a freshly poured mixed drink on the bar top. The katydid bartender is washing a glass. Under the bar is a penis graffiti and a forgotten yellow umbrella.A katydid shaking its ass under the disco ball

Happy Pride Month from my ridiculously gay upstairs bathroom-in-progress, which is on track to be finished by the end of this month!!
Our new upstairs bathroom, which is still being finished. There’s no flooring yet, and the bathtub is covered with plywood for protection, but the tiled walls are a nearly finished: a rainbow of 10 different colors of stripes with white in between them. It’s so happy and gay and I love it so much already!!

We now have an under bed storage bin full of paper media dating 1931-1939, all pulled out of the dormer walls and ceiling! I’m not sure which is my favorite, the puff piece about Eleanor Roosevelt meeting a chicken or the issue of Real Detective Magazine advertising “14 pages of crime photos!”
A St Paul Dispatch Pictures page featuring a photo of Eleanor Roosevelt meeting a large chicken! Caption: “Native Dignity of this twelve-pound, 18-month-old rooster evoked a hearty laugh from Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt when the First Lady visited the
Agriculture department's research center at Beltsville, Md. The bird was held for her inspection by Dr. C. W. Knox, senior poultry breeder at the center.” A full color 1931 issue id Real Detective magazine, with a shocked looking woman on the cover. It advertises “Exposing Hollywood’s ‘Love Bazaar,’” “Amazing confessions of a convict,” and “14 pages of crime pictures.” It’s wrinkled and fragile enough that I haven’t opened it beyond the first few pages.

Week 4 of construction. My sleep is broken from 8am power tool sounds, but my god, it’s starting to look like a bathroom. Chad is a dedicated volunteer site supervisor who has charmed the crew and multiple city inspectors. He’s only had to be rescued out of the floor three times!
One side of the framed in bathroom, where a nice deep soaking tub now sits on plywood subfloor. It’s fully plumbed and has a big arched shower niche framed in for storage. The little storage room on the other side of the bathroom wall, which has a low, sloped ceiling only suitable for short people. There’s a light fixture in this room for the first time in its 113 years of existence! It’s also set up for a small ductless washer/dryer combo unit.Chad the tuxedo cat lounging on the dining room table. There’s a fine dusting of sawdust on one side of his face because he was giving the city inspector a tour of the job site.

Found in the wall: this 1938 newspaper campaign ad for Martin A. Hogan, a congressional candidate who lost with only 8% of the votes. 8% was also the early polling number for 2016 presidential joke candidate Deez Nuts. It could be said that Mr. Hogan was the Deez Nuts of the Great Depression.
A 1938 newspaper ad that reads “ Martin A Hogan: Democratic candidate for Congress, third district of Minnesota. Mr. Hogan is a liberal. He is fearless and able. He is worthy of support of the voters of all parties.” The man in the photo has a bad haircut and no smile.A screenshot from the historical voting records the year that Mr. Hogan lost. Of the three candidates that ran for the third district, republican John G Alexander got 53,442 votes, farmer-labor candidate Henry G Teagan got 50,505 votes, and Mr. Martin got 14,073 votes.

This week we started construction to add a second bathroom to the house. I’ve been planning this project for a decade but somehow never realized that contractors making demo noises in my house at 8am would mean I can’t sleep past 8am. Anyway, this is days 1 and 2 of progress.
The upstairs landing of my home yesterday, with most of the landing and the alcove beyond it divided off by a temporary wall made of two by fours and plastic sheeting. The light from the windows in the alcove is shining through the plastic.
Day two, the alcove and stair landing from the opposite direction inside the plastic sheeting. The alcove has been stripped bare of its plaster walls, exposing the bones of the original studs and the slope of the roof where the dormer ends. There are bits of newspaper and something fuzzy and gray as insulation still left in spots. Where windows once were, there is now only chipboard screwed in place.

The last protest I was able to attend was for trans rights, in fall 2019. It was my dad’s last protest, and the visceral sense of belonging from standing with him that day still feeds my heart when I remember it. If you’re out there marching today, I hope you take that feeling home with you.

Donated my car today. Thanks for a decade of safe trips, Mabel 💚
My Facebook post:

Today we said goodbye to my beloved green 2012 Hyundai Accent hatchback, Mabel Sprout Hyundai. I learned to drive late, so Mabel was my first car. In the 10 years I had her, she carried Lyft passengers and real estate clients, hauled lumber and thrifted treasures, hosted road trips, parallel parked in front of hundreds of houses, saw my family safely through tumultuous times and bad weather, and ferried half a dozen unhappy cats to and from the vet.

I’ll never forget the time Mabel got stuck on an icy patch and a bunch of smiling gym bros jogged out of a nearby kickboxing gym, PICKED HER UP, and set her down on clear pavement. She really was a roller skate! The best roller skate.

Mabel was donated to the Newgate School, where in her retirement she will help future mechanics learn the trade. She is survived by an electric blue 2016 Subaru Crosstrek named Magnus Burnsides Subluru, who will carry on her legacy of safe and colorful travels. (green and blue heart emojis side by side) One of the last photos of my car: A bright green hatchback named Mabel, parked in the lot at the place I donated her today. There’s a dent on her side that’s covered by a green bandaid bumper sticker and her hood is a little bit sun bleached, but she’s not looking bad for a 14 year old Minnesota carOne of my first pictures of Mabel: a selfie I took with her the day I bought her in 2016. We were so young!Mabel parked in a wooded area along Great River Road, surrounded by fallen leaves and trees turning yellow

Updating my client handouts has been fun and normal
Screenshot from the handout I give my buyers about showings:
“Special 2026 ICE occupation edition FAQ

What if we have showings scheduled but I’m too exhausted from *gestures at everything*?
That’s a legitimate reason to cancel! We all need extra grace right now. Don’t overthink it, just let me know.

What happens if we run into an ICE altercation during showings?
If you’re in a position to stop and help our neighbors, I will join you. If you need to remove yourself from the situation for your own safety, I will do everything in my power to keep you safe.

If ICE comes to the door of a house we’re touring, do you have to let them in?
I am literally not allowed to let them in because I don’t have the seller’s permission (smiley face with hearts around it)”
