I've said it before and I'll keep saying it until it's no longer true--the Washington Post is now the lobbying arm for Amazon Web Services.

No, he voted for her. He led off Deadspin's "who we're voting for" piece with "I am voting for Clinton, which makes me the most conservative staffer on this goddamn site." Which proved sadly prescient, I guess.

Hi Damon,
I know you are likely not actively job searching, so l will keep this brief.
Your progression from digital newsroom leadership into product management, particularly building McClatchy's product organization and establishing its first Product Design and UX Research teams, stood out for a very specific reason.

Planet Terror was Robert Rodriguez. Eli Roth did the Thanksgiving parody trailer (and stunk up Death Proof as one of the misogynist bros--not a stretch for him, I think). And yeah, Planet Terror was the better genre pastiche. But Death Proof was the better movie for the same reasons.

(On a related note, it always bugged me that Eli Roth's shitty Nazi war movie pastiche in Inglourious Basterds looked exactly like a Hollywood WW2 movie. My guy, we know what Nazi propaganda films looked like and it wasn't that.)

To be fair, if a building in an R5(CW) zone casts a shadow for more than two hours on the summer solstice it will release Choronzon, the demon Jack Parsons and L. Ron Hubbard bound in the arcane geometries of the Los Angeles freeway system.

And if they had stayed at that (middling) level of quality, Marvel would have been fine. But they put out too many products too quickly, and they rushed to this half-baked multiversal stuff when they should have taken the opportunity to go back down to earth and reset the franchise.

Because the failures in Empire are driven by structural imbalances (the Rebellion can't take the Empire in a stand-up fight, Han can't outrun them) or core character traits (Luke can't abandon his friends) and the failures in TLJ are driven by the script's need for the Resistance to act like idiots.

The problem you outline in this post is real, but when you cite a WaPo editorial you are basically citing the house organ for a Trump courtier, nothing more.
010
Marc Singer @theothermarcsinger.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Fair point, but the thing that many Canadians and Americans need to understand is that the Bezosites at the Washington Post are Trumpites. WaPo is now the lobbying arm for Amazon Web Services, a means of currying favor with the would-be autocrat. They represent no one but Bezos' bottom line.

See also, the claims that Trump only ran because Obama roasted him at the WHCD. He'd been talking about it since the 80s! He actually ran in 2000! It's a way of rationalizing the unthinkable while simultaneously blaming mom for dad's abuse.

When it all comes crashing down, the basic political assumption we must all carry with us is that Trump 2.0 was never a legitimate government and that it is the duty of a future, legitimate US government to decide which policy decisions and actions to repudiate and which to legitimate.

I'm not sure how that solves the problem of Abrams just redoing the Death Star again. But in-universe, almost every problem the Resistance has in the *last* two sequels could be fixed by court martialing Poe and then shooting his ass out an airlock.

The sequels were doomed when Abrams decided to just remake A New Hope instead of doing something new. The Last Jedi was their chance to do something interesting, and Johnson did, but he also utterly failed to reset the trilogy to something more viable.

I'm not wild about some of the character redesigns, which seem more cosmetic than substantive. But underneath that superficial novelty there just might beat the heart of a good Legion story. And the book looks amazing. Maybe I more than kind of liked this? I think I'm on board, at least for now.

But it helps a lot that we see the founding Legionnaires being heroic right off the bat. Williamson seems to be going back to more traditional portrayals of the Legion homeworlds that Bendis neglected. And he reintroduces a classic Legion villain while giving them a very new twist.

Marc Singer @theothermarcsinger.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
As for Joshua Williamson's story... I'm willing to give it a chance. Parts of it are reminiscent of the generation-gap story from Mark Waid's "threeboot" (not a compliment) and there are elements of the Bendis reboot in there too (even less a compliment). Plus general reboot exhaustion!

A big part of that is the art by Hayden Sherman. There's a huge J.H. Williams III influence in the page layouts, but Sherman also brings their own distinctive designs. The teeming cityscapes look like the future but they're also distinct from each other, which are must-haves for this book.

Legion of Super-Heroes #1, out this week, does a lot of things that have killed previous versions of this series. Rebooting the continuity AGAIN. Casting the Legion as enemies of a repressive future society. Killing off characters right off the bat. And yet... I kind of liked it?
