I've had an upgrade on the last time I went this way, when it was running with a Class 150 (this is a Class 158) I'm also going to enjoy the scenery as I do come down here pretty rarely, and appreciate the quirk of timetabling sending me this way!

And so... Train 6: Barnetby to Sheffield Believe it or not, this is the second time in my life I've ended up on the Brigg line by complete accident; it's a surprisingly useful connection! I wonder if @iblrg.bsky.social are here?

I'm on a refurbished EMR Class 170 Turbostar, and I've got to say I do like the aesthetic! The grey and purple really fit the train, and I find these are really nice when the loading is light, such as today I hope the plug sockets work well!

Hello from Ely!! A station not really like any other, especially in terms of the trains that come here - Electrostars, Sprinters, Turbostars and freight all at a relatively small three platform station. Not a bad place to wait, all things considered.

I've settled myself into declassified first on this 8 car Class 700. Maybe it will make me feel better about my decisions. So far, I'm feeling reasonable about this; a tidy multiple unit quickly eating up the stations along a branch line is everything I love about regional rail.

The ticket has such popularity that when using Deutsche Bahn's navigation app, DB Navigator, there is a toggle in the journey planner to only show you routes that would be valid using the Deutschlandticket. This will lock you to what Deutsche Bahn considers to be regional rail services only.

For reference - the cost of the earlier Train 1900 turned out to be €12. Which seems a lot but it is a return ticket, of which I never used the return portion. The mining train set off for Doihl, which is where the entrance to the mine is. #SevenEightMine

At Rodange, I bought my ticket onwards to Arlon. This proved to be a mistake, because the CFL ticket machines do not let you buy a single ticket out of the country. They only permit day returns. So I paid €8 when I should have paid €4. Cost: €8 and my good mood. #SevenEightMine

SIX The journey from Longwy to Rodange was a short one. The railway lines around the France / Belgium / Luxembourg tripoint are an absolute mess, but there is just the one France - Luxembourg crossing at the triangle, and we are on it. #SevenEightMine

There are many unelectrified lines in the foreground.A map of the lines around the France / Belgium / Luxembourg tripoint. In the bottom left, a line comes up from France, which is Longwy. This splits before crossing any borders into a line towards Aubange and a line towards Rodange. The line towards Aubange crosses the Belgian border, and the line towards Rodange crosses the Luxembourg border. The line from Rodange splits before crossing any borders into the line towards Longwy (already mentioned) and the line towards Belgium. This line crosses the Belgian border first, before splitting into a line to Athus and a line to Aubange. Both these lines remain in Belgium. It is not possible to get from Athus to Longwy. There is also a curve from Athus to Aubange which allows trains to remain in Belgium and not cross either the French or Luxembourg borders. I told you this was complicated.

I saw very little of Longwy, I was in a massive rush. But I liked what I saw; it had life, people clearly wanted to be there. The fact it's extremely badly connected to Luxembourg simply didn't bother anyone. Then it was to the station for the last train from there into Luxembourg. #SevenEightMine

I almost quit at this point, I have to say. If I had to go the way they suggested, I'd never get the plan to work. I considered Uber. And then I considered that maybe, just maybe, they were wrong. And the Transport for Grand Longwy route C showed up bang on time. #SevenEightMine

Anyway, after arguing and pulling the tourist card, the driver let me hop on given I already had the correct ticket with me. We don't blame the front line staff, because - this is not the first time I've experienced this this weekend - they will do whatever they can to help you out. #SevenEightMine

I showed up at the bus stop for the 604 bus, and held out my arm to flag it down. The driver made a mocking arm motion and drove past. Okay, one shitty driver, why not. The bus runs every 15 minutes, and I wasn't at a timing point, so I used my wait to walk to one. #SevenEightMine

Upon realising that my bus from Audun-le-Tiche onwards would be run by RGTR, the Luxembourgish bus company, I looked into what tickets were available. Their website suggested the RegioZone 1 ticket, which is sold at any rail ticket machine. Good idea, nice and simple. Cost: €3. #SevenEightMine

FIVE Made it to Audun-le-Tiche!! Like Volmerange-les-Mines earlier, this branch line runs literally just over the border, and then stops unceremoniously. Basically the only thing in France between Luxembourg and the end of the line was a Lidl. #SevenEightMine
A photo of the car park of Lidl in Audun-le-Tiche. This Lidl is just over the border into France from Luxembourg. You can see the back of the Lidl from the Audun-le-Tiche station platforms.A photo of the end of the line at Audun-le-Tiche. An unceremonious set of buffers determines that the railway may stray no further into France than here. There is a CFL train in the platform slightly further back from the buffers.

Welcome back to Esch-sur-Alzette!! I'm hopping on the train down a second branch line poking into France - this time the line to Audun-le-Tiche. This is a five minute shuttle service which runs a handful of times a day, generally just morning and evening. #SevenEightMine

With no other convenient moves until two hours later, now seems like the perfect opportunity to drop off my bags at the hotel, which is down the Esch-sur-Alzette loop line. And maybe, if the weather improves again, go for a wander somewhere nice? This free travel thing is great. #SevenEightMine
