It has its origins in the 1930s, and it has traditionally meant something along the lines of: Be aware of the ways that this society is not built for you. Be aware of the ways that you may face disadvantage and oppression in this society.
Again, this is a term that emerged in Black vernacular in the 1930s. And that is, as far as I'm concerned, what the term means.

But honestly, I am so much more concerned about how well the in-universe grappling about the myth vs. reality of war and how they start and why they continue -- all of which the movie fucking nailed, and the characters are rightly not concerned with who is playing what role.

And if I am to allow *any* room for cynicism on the casting choice, the backlash proves that everyone was captive to a myth of a person as motivating the story and not a real woman. What I don't love about that read is that it requires me to assume cynicism, perhaps unconscious, on Nolan's part.

One of the more interesting choices was allowing bleed-in of non-Homeric text. Everything about the Helen/Clytemnestra handling just blew any pre-conceived notions about the right or wrong of this war sky high. Weirdly it reminded me of one of my favorite SW related plot points in a TV show...

For reasons that involve my phone dying, I walked all the way home from Times Square and had a lot of time to think and every quibble I have really comes down to "doing justice to *** would require at least another hour of movie. Except the costumes. I really do think that got a bit botched.

Just imagining more physical gods in this movie makes me think of Altman-esque overlapping dialogue with some really epic reverb. So I'm just going to assume that the film's Athena is just a version O imagined to pour lemon juice on his PTSD.

I am not hot on the costumes, and I'm sorta on the fence about Athena as O's Harvey. If I were making the choice, there'd be no Athena or you'd have regular appearances of the whole supernatural team, a choice that honestly would only have worked if Nolan did a multi-episodic.

Saw the Odyssey last night. I am *not* a Nolan stan by any stretch -- I hated The Dark Knight Rises so much that I never saw the first Nolan batman, and I was so certain I wouldn't miss anything I went for a 20 minute bathroom break when Batman was stuck in the weird oubliette prison...
