Oh that’s a really cool, deep connection! Yes it’s a fantastic place.

By the way, anyone want to be the new dean of the cathedral in Fond du Lac?

Had a fantastic week with the folks in the Society of Catholic Priests. Now on to diocesan convention and then guest speaking at the EPN board meeting!

When Matthew Soerens of World Relief tells Christians the Trump administration has banned persecuted Christians, many don't believe him. We talked about why. Listen to the whole conversation: austinkocher.substack.com/p/president-... @matthewsoerens.bsky.social

Quote card. Matthew Soerens, World Relief: “Occasionally, they do not believe this data, because they’ve heard so much rhetoric about Donald Trump being a great champion of persecuted Christians. It just is so dissonant with the rhetoric.” From the conversation President Trump Bans Christians Fleeing Persecution, austinkocher.substack.com

It is the triumph of philosophical and then especially Christian virtue rather than popular “virtue”

KidzBoptotenlieder @theodramatist.com · 28/09/2026

Tbf I DO think there’s a sense that “virtue” in the earliest sense of “manliness” kind of *is* what they’re capturing; but once virtue becomes connected to arete and philosophical ethics there is no resemblance to what they’re capturing chuds are after.

Especially since my guess is at least 3/4 of the people in the NPR picture belong to churches who are considerably *more* aligned with the democratic party on social and not just economic issues than Leo is (and don't get me wrong I like Leo)

The state of the archreactionary US bishops whom he appointed that we are still recovering from says quite a bit I think

Oh I have ALWAYS gotten the sense that Benedict was a quiet, sweet soul who wanted to teach and write books.

People, Catholics and non-Catholics alike, without much theological grounding, basically thought JPII was super open and progressive because he was charismatic and BXVI was a hyper reactionary because he liked pretty liturgy, when BXVI was, all things considered, more progressive than JPII

Not ADHD (I have OCD), but I have found the capacity to go through and quickly clean out my inbox when I let it get huge and overwhelming (which becomes a terrible feedback loop) just like absolutely game changing.

I guess you don't have to go to church much when you think you're god?

While I never listened to country in my youth, my wife, @phurns.bsky.social is, owing to her South Dakota provenance, a deeply committed country musicist, and I have been introduced to most 90s and 00s musicians, from John Michael Montgomery to Joe Diffie. And I have never heard "Choosin Texas"

Turns out that religion in America is not and has never been, despite their best efforts to convince people to the contrary, the exclusive or even the dominant purview of the religious right.

🧵 [Catalan dictionary thread] Catalan/Valencian has tons of different dictionaries for various purposes. Many learners often ask me about them, and even Catalan speakers don’t know about some of these... So here’s a list of the ones I use the most and what they offer :3

Old farm kid here. A lot of rural trump support has nothing to do with farm economics. Here's what I see there now: weird conspiracy theories, living in a news bubble , intense rural peer pressure, scapegoating others for their self-created personal problems and jealously of those who moved away.

I will say, Opus 5.5 extra and max seem much better at following instructions than Opus 5, like on Fable 5.1's level. I haven't tried Opus 5.5 for longer context work.
