Greens promise R&D at 3% of GDP. NZ spends 1.54%. Last year the government scrapped the 2% target and cut the Marsden Fund by about 29%. Why it matters: in 1970 an hour of Kiwi work produced about what a Danish or Finnish hour did. By 2022 it was 40% less. Denmark and Finland spend 3%. #nzpol

I think a lot of NZers have a simple voting algorithm: if they’ve had one term, give them another; if they’ve had two terms, it’s time for a change.

Might bump one of their list only people out of Parliament. That could be no boats, or Bish if he doesn’t win his electorate. I don’t recommend trying to vote strategically like that because all we have to go on are notoriously dodgy polls.

I was called by a campaigner from the Greens in Wgtn North (bc they had my old address on file) and she recommended EV Lab, PV Green and made it sound like that’s their official position but I don’t know for sure. OTOH if splitting the left vote here gets the Tories another electorate seat it…

Title: Government cuts to come could 'dwarf' those to date...

Nicola Willis is sitting in her lavish chair nonchalantly swinging her leg thinking out loud with a finger tapping on her lip. To the right of her are five bins full of department names. It's a pile of destroyed agencies laying in ruins.

I ended up choosing a symbol of it all.
But if anyone really captures the worst instincts of this government, it is Simeon Brown, the Minister whose deranged 2024 Transport General Policy Statement amounted to a war on anyone not in a car, and who promised $50 billion worth of over-specced trophy roads we can never pay for.

The deal for one of those roads, the 26km stretch from Warkworth to Te Hana, north of Auckland, was signed off in July, at a “net present value” cost of $3.65 billion. It’s a public-private partnership – a form of Afterpay for governments, in that it costs more than raising debt, but repayments can come later. Even with the deal signed, the exact numbers remain a secret, but Connor Sharp, of transport lobby group Greater Auckland, estimates the PPP will cost $9 billion over 25 years – and require 10% of all transport funding in its first decade.

It’s actually worse than that. Like its Labour predecessor, the government’s transport policy statement sees NZTA repaying a loan from the government (in this case, $1.6b). But in Brown’s version, repayments during this term of government were lowered by means of a “bullet loan”, a device that requires interest-only repayments for the length of the term, then the full principal at the end – which in this case is the 2033-34 year. From 2028, the land transport fund, which is replenished from petrol excise and road user charges, will no longer be able to cover the annual cost of servicing the debt. Future governments, Sharp concludes, will need to find taxpayer money for NZTA to pay the government back.

My Listener column about enduring under the worst government of my lifetime was surprisingly difficult to write – I wrangled text for days trying to work out what I could fit in the page I had. www.nzherald.co.nz/the-listener...
There is no corresponding whopper attached to the present government, if only because that would be hard to top. Instead, there’s been a series of feckless, arrogant decisions that will cost us dearly in years to come, and an inordinate focus on culture war issues while the economy stalled. Youth unemployment rose to a 30-year high while we wasted time and money on the Treaty Principles Bill.
