The Gallo thing doesn’t sit well. Aurora doesn’t have great alternatives for mayor by any stretch but I knew that before attending tonight.

One positive from the evening was that all candidates for council were welcome to participate in a pre and post event meet and greet. Fairly well run and well organized. A rare chance for face time with candidates from all wards.

I understand the strategy if that’s the case but it discredits the whole event. Easy to understand now why Mrakas wanted nothing to do with it. It was basically an arm’s length Gallo rally.

Perhaps I missed something but it seems that the debate was designed to rule out two other inexperienced candidates who will split the vote away from Gallo, guaranteeing Mrakas a third term as mayor.

Well my main takeaway is that this was organized by people who are adjacent to the John Gallo campaign. I didn’t see executive representation from many other ratepayers groups other than ward one.

I’m going into this tonight with low expectations to say the least. Both candidates in my ward-1, have defended their opposition to specific applications in their platforms. I understand that they want to win & this is Aurora.

I’ve long had the belief that the ratepayers groups are regressive ant-growth groups despite individual members forming a housing for all group after Mrakas vetoed the men’s shelter. They & their candidates are still actively opposing density applications as part of their activism.

Kudos to the ratepayers groups across Aurora for forming a coalition to host a mayoral debate. The first of its kind, since I’ve lived here anyway. Incumbent Tom Mrakas has declined the opportunity to meet face/face with his opponents & the public in general tonight. Nonetheless will be interesting.

Thank you for your story. I live in Toronto & can also recount almost every minute of that morning. Including when I realized that a good friend had recently told me she was starting a new job at WTC the day after Labour Day. She survived thankfully For me 9/11 belongs to her not the ghouls.
