Well that's a wrap! Our Visitor Centre in Llanymynech is now closed until next year but there's still so much for our dedicated volunteers to do to keep busy. One of which is the refurbishment of our narrowboat toilet. Must look for some new tiles this week! #UKCanals

On this day 6 years ago at Frankton locks on the Montgomeryshire canal, now restored and navigable; when I grew up a little further along the canal this junction led nowhere. On the first photo, the house on the right used to be a pub, to which the steps in the stone bank would have given access.
A view down a canal from the bridge across a narrow staircase lock. The canal curves to the left, between stone banks; on the left the land falls away to a lane; on the right, a 19th century house from which steps descend in the stone bank to the water.A view across a canal lock towards a vista of fields and woods in golden sunset light. The foot of a canal lock, the bottom gates open, with a vista of sunset-lit fields beyond.A canal junction in sunset light: a fingerpost points right, down a branch, while a red-brick canal bridge glows beyond the junction.

Montgomery Canal lining adds 60 metres in May
#MontgomeryCanal Montgomery Canal lining advanced another 60 metres at the Shropshire Union Canal Society (SUCS) work party from 29 April to 3 May 2026. The five-day push added two preparation days before the usual Friday-to-Sunday pattern. Warm weather helped teams profile channel and cut liners ready for a prompt Friday start. Montgomery Canal lining and blocking catch up By Saturday evening another 60 metres of channel had been lined. Then a strong Sunday turnout let blocking catch up with the liner. Offside rip-rap was hand-barrowed along the new blocks because plant cannot reach that bank. Soil covered the stone. Most of that bank was also reseeded. As a result the offside looked tidy by close of play. The towpath side is easier to reach, so power barrows will finish it next month. In addition, four corporate volunteers from Aico joined on Friday. They cleared brash in the morning. Afterwards they helped with lining and blocking. They won the trophy for best corporate volunteers o

Hello, it very much depends on which section you are referring to. Currently restoration work in Shropshire is seeing the towpath improved as they go. Bridges are often low though and at this time of the year vegetation might be growing across the towpath.
