deeply annoyed by how lush this random roadside staghorn is, i don't even think anyone waters this
a tree which trunk is fully covered by a huge lump of staghorn fern. the fern's leaves come in two forms, the shields go up like a green crown, the staghorns droop down, giving the overall appearance very full and lush

Well, I said 2026 would be the year I learned ferns, and I must say, it’s going rather well. I’ve had so much fun delving into the pteridological rabbit hole, which has given me a rather good excuse to stray beyond Northumberland... 😂🌿

This is a remarkably extreme statistic. Bordeaux, France has recorded more days >40°C in 2026 than in the entire 105 year period combined dating back to 1920 when records began. This summer has been so far above extreme it’s difficult to put into words. Chart: @WxNB_

Botany takes you to some wild places! #Intrepid High on the north face of Beinn Lair, Wester Ross, with a newly discovered population of Alpine Lady-fern below and nothing but wilderness beyond... 😍
Happy but tired botanist bridging across the top of a gully on the north face of Beinn Lair, with a populaion of Alpine Lady-fern (Athyrium distentifolium) growing beneath him. Behind a loch and another mountain are visible through the gully slit.
This nationally scarce plant is found in areas of late snow lie, hence the top of this north-facing gully at around 800m above sea level. This was the first record of the species for the hectad.
