Our book Enough is Enough: Degrowth, Capitalism, and Liberation Theology is out now! If you hate capitalism, you'll like this book. Ask your local book shop or library to get it for you and then give us a review on Jeff Bezos' hell site.
It's time for us to say with conviction that enough is enough, that we will no longer stand by as capitalists and governments allow creation to be destroyedCreation does not have to be worth something that can be expressed in monetary value. Creation is already enough simply by being itself, already good, not in need of any value added to secure its place in the world.Capitalist growth continues to open its jaws to accept the sacrifices of people and the planet, destined for its insatiable gullet. But we don't have to feed this idol any longer. We can say enough is enough.

@nicoleteburbach.bsky.social and @themagnificast.bsky.social sighting in my latest column 👀
From my NCR column: It reminds me of something transgender theologian Dr. Nicolete Burbach said recently. on "The Magnificast" podcast:
The church .... it's like the body of Christ. You are saved corporally through incorporation into this body.
This body is like a kind of mystical or sacramental unity which unites you with other bodies in the church in a very kind of physical way.
Hearing a trans theologian speak so powerfully about embodied incorporation into the body of Christ is deeply moving to me, especially because it reframes queer and trans existence not as alien to Catholic life, but as already participating in the sacred communion at the heart of the church itself.

As Cuba continues to hang on despite the current phase of illegal, cruel, and frankly evil isolation by the US, I can't help but remember a scene from when I visited the island in 2023 that underscores the infuriating bipartisan policy of imposed suffering on an entire country. (long 🧵)

Don't let anyone ever tell you that "they were men of their times." That's bull. Case in point - Benjamin Lay, the first Quaker to call out slavery in dramatic fashion in the early 18th century, when all the magnates of Philadelphia were pious slaveholders. Tear down their statues and put his up.

This is a very common, albeit extremely bad, deployment of the parable of the talents! The book @deandettloff.bsky.social and I published yesterday has an important correction to this kind of thinking.
The premier argued that a new pipeline would help meet growing global energy demand. But she also had a message specifically tailored to her Christian audience. “There’s another way to look at it,” she said. “I’m sure you remember the Parable of the Talents in the Gospel of Matthew — in it, Jesus teaches about stewardship.”

Smith said that particular biblical passage refers to humankind being entrusted with resources that must be managed carefully for the benefit of other people. This “fits with how Albertans feel about the resources that are beneath our feet,” she said.

For Christians, confronting growth is essential, not only as a matter of injustice but also in order to clear a space to truly hear the Gospel in our own lives. In the Global North, we must attune ourselves to the appeals made by our siblings in the faith and all the oppressed in the Global South to break the value chains that enrich a global minority at the expense of a global majority.

Wondering what to do about capitalism? Our new book has the answers. Spoiler: the answer is abolish capitalism.
Capitalism will drive down labor and material costs as much as it can and multinational companies have the power to do it on a world scale. What we need, instead, is a movement capable of saying no, collectively, to our own conscription into an imperial mode of living.
