Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 27/07/2025I love blazing star ever since I learned about it this year. This one is growing in an abandoned construction site by my work in Eastern WA 020
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 23/07/2025Haha! I wondered about that. Good to know! It will fit right in with my opium poopies which reseed like crazy, too. 000
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 17/07/2025Nicotiana ‘Indian peace pipe’ flowering in my #SpokaneGarden. Started from seed, now 3’ tall. It smells so wonderful at night, but it doesn’t quite perfume the air like I had hoped. 220
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 12/06/2025No irises in my yard - sorry! I have blue eye grass which is in the same family but looks nothing like iris. 010
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 06/06/2025It’s Friday’s Flora as featured on the subreddit SpokaneGardeners! To say I have an infatuation with Sambucus is an understatement. I am not even embarrassed that I have five different cultivars in my yard. #spokanegarden 120
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 17/05/2025Wow! Those are huge! I’m growing Indian peace pipe. It’s about the right size for my yard. 110
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 17/05/2025Nice! I’m growing tobacco too. But it’s the ornamental flowering kind instead of the stimulant smoking kind. 110
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 16/05/2025Friday’s Flora - Hakonechloa. Looking for a bit of Zen in your life? Let this shade tolerant, clumping grass overcome you with tranquility. #spokanegarden 010
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 13/05/2025Roasting sounds fun! When I get a bunch of spicy ones I usually pickle them. That also takes out the spice. Pickled radishes are pretty smelly but so delicious. 010
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 13/05/2025Harvested my first radish today! It is beautiful and had a lovely texture. But it was spicy. How to prevent spicy radish? #spokanegarden #vegetablegarden 7150
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 11/04/2025#SpokaneGarden it’s cheery, bold, and evergreen… Lenten Rose. Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 08/04/2025Awesome! Yes I think the intent is to build more community support through an active membership and board. The drip irrigation will be so informative! That is not put on by the club, but is a partnership between Spokanescape and the library. 020
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 08/04/2025Next year I will plant directly into a more nutritious medium. Seed starting mix doesn’t have much nutrients in it. 100
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 08/04/2025That’s about when I started mine. I grow them on a heat pad until they germinate then I put them under grow lights. Mine are way smaller than yours. I start them in sterile seed starter mix in my basement. What is your growing medium? 100

Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 08/04/2025Do you follow SpokaneGardeners on Reddit? I moderate that group. You might be interested. I just posted info there about an edible native plant presentation. 120
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 08/04/2025Ha! Good question. So there was one called TIEG and they disbanded last year. My friend at the city library is trying to foster creation of a new garden club called Garden 4 You. I am not sure how that is going. I went to the first meeting which was really nice, but not really club-like. 120
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 06/04/2025I think so. They advertised a bunch of natives last year which is what I am currently into. I went on Sunday and they were all out of the natives. But they still had a ton of perennials and they have an indoor plant section. And they give away free veg seeds. 100

Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 04/04/2025Happy Friday! Serviceberries become enveloped in maché-like flowers making a show-stopper in April. Their early, sweet blooms are excellent for pollinators. Follow r/spokanegardeners on Reddit #spokanegarden 121
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 03/04/2025Good! Not very big but they are growing. My tomatoes are getting second set of true leaves. They’re typically 6” tall by mid May. Peppers have first set of true leaves and are usually 3” tall by mid May. 010
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 03/04/2025I potted my tomatoes and peppers up and put them in my greenhouse a week ago. In years past, I usually put them in greenhouse early April. I put my melons out there during the day and bring in at night because I don’t know how they will handle cold. 110
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 30/03/2025Interesting! And sad for the recipient. Regarding your bullet example, it was likely HCV. HIV does not transmit that easily, due in part to it being a RNA virus, vs HCV’s DNA structure. 110
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 28/03/2025Happy Friday Flora, #spokanegarden! Pansy and violets are one of my favorite early spring flowers simply for their bright color and cute face-like flowers. Are they old-fashioned? I prefer the term “classic”. 011
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 28/03/2025Biscuit root (Lomatium Dissectum) that I winter-sowed in a plastic container sprouted today! #spokanegarden #nativeplant 150

Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 27/03/2025Japanese ones look similar to an English, but they are supposed to be sweeter. I hear they are the sweetest cucumber. We will see. 110
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 27/03/2025I haven’t grown tomatillos. Can you bury the stem like you do with tomatoes? If so, they are fine, just bury it when you pot up. If this plant doesn’t respond well to that, the. Yeah they are pretty leggy. 100
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 27/03/2025Yes, those deadly white ones (which surprisingly are not cammassia at all, despite their appearance and their common name. Have you seen Cammassia Cusickii? It has baby blue flowers in abundance, and it is beautiful. It is native to E Wa, I believe, but more north I think. 100
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 27/03/2025@resonanteye.bsky.social I don’t like the thick skins on lemon cukes. 010
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 27/03/2025No, I just have a burpless kind I planted and they are getting their second set of true leaves. I’m going to have to pot them up before the plant giveaway. I got seeds for Japanese cucumbers which I will start in April, and I plan on growing those in my yard this year. 210
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 26/03/2025Did you start cukes yet? Mine are all getting their second set of true leaves. Let me know if you need some. 110
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 26/03/2025Update: these already need potted up, meaning I started them about 3 weeks too early for plant swap purposes. So some folks will be able to get some nice big plants at the swap! I did save the beets and lettuce for my own garden, and put them in my raised beds yesterday. 000
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 26/03/2025That is awesome! I’m zone 7a but our average frost dates are about the same as they were when we were zone 5b 20 years ago. I’ll check Niki out. 100
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 26/03/2025I should say the extra warmth is minimal, but the goal is that it is enough to get the most out of cool season crops this early in the season. I planted beet seeds, carrot seeds, and peas hoping these covers will speed up germination on those. 010
Kyle @thekr.bsky.social · 26/03/2025More for heat and to keep frost off. They are a synthetic fabric so they still breathe but do help with warmth. Some ppl use plastic which can really warm up stuff underneath. That can be good but on warm days, plastic needs to be uncovered to avoid cooking the plants. Covers can help w/ pests too 110
