A pool at McKinney Fallas, people stand on the rocky ledges above it, looking down, considering a swim despite not having a bathing suit. The trees in the background sit upon the soil, dreaming of a day when the rock between them and the water softens and they can creep close enough to dip their roots in it.

Further upstream, the water browned with tannins, the rocks sculpted into strange bowls and depressions by time. Beneath the surface they form natural tubs where fish and turtles dart and waver.

The ruins of the McKinney Homestead, its roof, doors, and windows decayed away, leaving only the gray brick walls and chimney, sky slipping through them from the other side of the structure. Behind the camera, I contort to avoid the rows of barbed wire that keep visitors from the structure.

Cacti in the park, their scars bear the carved initials of countless lovers, the letters of their names left brown and dead against the broad green of their pads.
