The Fig Economy @figgityfigs.bsky.social · 07/10/2026

Sometimes my wife and I like to send each other text messages as though they’re democratic fundraising messages, and I believe she has produced the jewel of the form.

, it's
and I
have some personal news to share with you.
Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I feel deeply that we should have salad tonight
This year has been challenging in many ways, and I have immense gratitude for the kindness and support of family, community, and people like you who have continued to stand by me through everything. It means the world, and I wanted you to be among the first to know that squash is in the oven and kale is in the fridge.

As many of you are aware, ve been navigating one of the most challenging periods of my day while waiting for dinner.
Facing baseless federal hunger brought on by not eating since lunch, fighting for the working kids of this country, and now caring for a mean toddler and helping him grow up in a world that isn't always easy. But it has also reminded me exactly why I do this work and who I do it for.
I will never stop working to eat dinner. I will never stop fighting for what is right, even when there is also some feta in the fridge. And I will never stop being so very thankful that you are by my side in this important work and that there is tahini in the pantry for dressing
With love and gratitude,
stop to end

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Everyone is so caught up with saying "some books are terrible" and missing the bigger and more alarming picture here. If you really think an author advocating outsourcing an entire genre to ai is acceptable then I don't know what tell you.

romance media having to be 100% perfect in terms of relationship rep otherwise people might get Ideas is a belief that a lot of self-described intellectuals hold and it drives me up the fucking wall, man

dave franco as were-asong gubat raww is plenty sympathetic, and manny jacinto’s bungi and kevin mccann’s mermahn made me cry laughing. batiba reminded me of a cat and a tarsier and also totoro. LOVED manang. killer character design, genuinely menacing but so incredibly cool.

i have Big Feelings™️ about the jo and raissa story as a person who was born in the philippines and moved to this country as a pre-teen that i wouldn’t unpack here. loved the focus on remembrance, the memories and stories being told and retold as ties that bind us to our loved ones

really enjoyed forgotten island! longer spoiler-free review on ig but basically i loved how the film is a love letter to filipinos but also wish that the movie left some breathing room for the audience to appreciate the cultural references and fantastic reinterpretations of our mythological beings

yesterday’s ren faire fit! went with a less formal filipiniana à la mujer filipina (1895) by lorenzo de la rocha icaza. peep my new tambourine necklace!! ate good, drank well, got drenched by the rain, but i’m so happy i got to hang out with my beautiful friends!! all in all a wonderful faire day 🌧️

we got so excited we did beso-beso before we went back to our respective friend groups and i’ve never felt more like a grownup filipino lmao, kinda missed out on those when i came here

jireh 🍂 @thejirehscope.bsky.social · 27/09/2026

had a magical moment at ren faire today when a fellow filipino asked to get a photo with me in my filipiniana and then it turns out he came from the same province as my parents and actually spoke itawis, which is a language obscure enough that most filipinos i know don’t even realize exists

for sure, but it’s actually weird how so many filipinos i saw did not pick up on the cues that it may be a half thing. they just felt like it was pandering to filipinos and carelessly mixing asian traditions

040

jireh 🍂 @thejirehscope.bsky.social · 24/09/2026

people are very upset on threads, it’s wild. but i also do get where they’re coming from so i just wish there was just one line (“my viet side of the family has this tradition…”)

020

jireh 🍂 @thejirehscope.bsky.social · 24/09/2026

if they made her completely vietnamese, it’s ambiguous asian casting. they made her filipino like rachel but didn’t change her name, so people are saying they should’ve hired a viet actress instead. they opted for a mix but didn’t bother to put it in context, now we have this

170

jireh 🍂 @thejirehscope.bsky.social · 24/09/2026

adding this because i’m actually highkey sick of seeing it on threads: i wish they included one (1) line about anh also being half-viet. because to me, it clicked immediately with her name and the lantern, but because they only mentioned her being filipino, it’s suddenly a race issue 🫩

jireh 🍂 @thejirehscope.bsky.social · 24/09/2026

aside from the fact that she didn’t like tom’s acting she’s so much more neutral about this movie than some reylos, even

040

jireh 🍂 @thejirehscope.bsky.social · 24/09/2026

?? all she said was that tlh is “mostly is just an ordinary romcom with a ship dynamic of grouchy guy, nice woman,” talking about the leads being representative of tropes rather than a 1:1 direct for the canon characters. nothing she said was unkind or insulting, just an observation
