And with Braverman, she states that race can be superseded by nationality after a few generations, so that suggests there is some acceptance that ethnicity is not just ‘race’ as most people would understand it

Jack Greig-Midlane @thejackgm.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Was it not understood that way (by some people) before as well? That’s my recollection. On the other hand, people who use it synonymously with race also appear to accept e.g. Black British as an accepted ethnic category even though there is a stated component that is not racial.

I suppose we are conflating ethnicity, nationality, national identity in the discussion. But that’s also similar to the confusion over ethnicity as a category itself.

For example a first/second gen Asian person may see themselves as culturally English because of how they live, who they associate with, and how that makes them feel. I don’t see the value in restricting that subjective reading of ethnicity.

They may operate differently, but the debate here is less about what people generally associate with land masses/states and more about a restrictive/rigid definition of ethnicity. I struggle to see how ethnicity is not contingent to a significant degree on identification

For all the times we hear policy people and campaigners say ‘we need to have a national conversation about [important issue]’, and this is the type of thing we end up talking about for months with all the subtlety of a Moral Maze segment.

“There is one concrete thing we must insist on this administration delivering. It matters a lot more than debts measured in imaginary money. We have got to deport millions and millions and millions of people. Without that, nothing else matters.”Text from guardian article quoting Milo:

"I didn't really understand the physical reality of how institutionalized the brutality is in America," he said. "It's like everybody that's arrested is an MS-13 gang member, and it hurts a lot more than it looks like on television."

New from me: Britain’s graduate earnings premium is falling, cue “too many go to university!” But non-university outcomes are also bad, cue “we must reform vocational routes!” Both miss the point: people used to think education drove economic outcomes, but the economy drives educational outcomes.

The whole thing is incredibly ahistorical. These debates were going on in the 1950s/60s - Wright Mills, Becker, Gouldner, for instance. Especially egregious to leave out Gouldner since it was his journal that the ‘anti-woke’ types quoted in the article raided.

Great to see the Guardian champion the SHAPE (Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences) subjects, but this piece gives impression that they are expensive, whereas many are 'cheap to teach' subjects subsidising more expensive subjects, mainly in STEM and medicine. The crisis demands better understanding.
