I salute you, reporter, for remembering Skybus.
The tunnel stored city buses there for years. The tunnel was planned as a centerpiece of Skybus, a failed autonomous people-mover proposal in the 1960s. The structure largely sat dormant until it began serving traffic in 2004.

"Why doesn't the city have enough grocery stores?"
What the zoning doesn’t allow is a grocery store. To add a supermarket of roughly 10,000 square feet and a small café, the developer needs a commercial overlay. Adding one takes a full trip through ULURP (the community board, the borough president, the commission and the City Council), about seven months in all. So far, nobody has argued against the store, and HPD, the city housing agency financing the project, wants supermarkets near the buildings it funds. It’s the least controversial part of the project, and the only part that needs a vote.

The conclusion. For those who don't know, gauntlet tracks are two sets of tracks that interlace and share a single bed so they can run very close together. AFAIK, this is possible thanks to being able to drive line of sight. A clever solution! (Thanks to @82streetcar.bsky.social for showing me!)

Something for your (various North American) holiday Monday: In Amsterdam, sometimes trams narrow down to a single "lane" using gauntlet tracks so they can travel down narrow and busy streets. Fun to watch!

Or at least, so I would have argued strongly a few years ago. Modern low-floor vehicles have actually really gotten rid of much of the gap.

Man, after a few days of riding the Dutch railway network, I'm spoiled. Universal tap in / tap out with contactless payment, electrified with fast speeds and fast acceleration, and hop on frequent train services travelling all over the country. If only the Northeast Corridor worked like this!

Walking through Amsterdam, I was at first confused about what these structures were... until I saw a car pull into one. It's an automated underground parking garage. I knew these existed, but had never seen them before. Very cool in a sci-fi/engineering way, but not exactly a great use of money.
