Something I’ve noticed among people who don’t make games is the assumption that an IDEA is valuable, and the EXECUTION is irrelevant. But ideas are cheap - every dev I know has hundreds - execution is everything! AI copy-slopping an idea, even a proven one, is largely valueless. #GameDev

A teen on Reddit was lamenting about the state of the world and options for the future. My response only got 16 views - did it even reach the OP? - but I feel so strongly about it I'll repost it here. I hope this finds anyone who needs to hear it.

Reddit post in r/economy entitled "Im in highschool... i dont see a future" with the text: "It may not happen but I believe in that the economy will crash with everything going on. What are the possible outcomes of this? Is there light at the end kf [sic] the tunnel?"

Answer to the previous post from "TheFargo". It reads:
"Hello friend! It’s understandable to feel this way. Our media environment doesn’t help; things that are shocking or upsetting are promoted in our social media feeds because terror drives “engagement.” To be sure, we’re in a period of transition - political things are happening that I never thought I’d see in my lifetime. A “realignment” is happening across everything, from politics to work. Something old is dying and something new is being born. That is ALWAYS scary. But as others have pointed out, realignments happen every few generations. Whenever things change, there’s an opportunity to change them for the better. And in the long arc of history, things HAVE been getting better.

My advice would be to focus not on the dying of the old but the birth of the new. Your generation will shape the world to come. Don’t let your worldview be defined by an engagement algorithm; look to your neighbors and friends, build real communities, solve problems, learn to use the new tools at your disposal, and never stop fighting for a better world. These are scary times… but also the most amazing time to be alive. Be strong, and draw strength from your community. We’re going to get through this, and if we do it right, the world will be far better than the one you were born into."

Video games have been a truly free medium, with endless possibilities for over 25 years now and it feels like we've done barely anything with it. Once technology allowed for essentially any type of game to be made, we all decided we really only want a handful of game types to be made.

Warren Spector announced that he's retiring from games. He is one of my big influences! I still have my original cheese-puff-stained copies of the Toon TTRPG I played with my friends in High School. Deus Ex was GameSpy's 2000 Game of the Year. Spector understood games and play at a deep level!

This video really brought me back! They sold these "Science Fair" "150-in-One" etc. electronics kits from the 60s to the 80s. I had a hand-me-down version with wooden sides. To drive the LED lights on my latest project, I use the "Programmable IO" or "PIO" part of the #raspberrypi #pico. This is a super-fun way to learn assembly / machine language programming! I wrote up a detailed explanation, down to the individual bits - in my repo: github.com/TheFargo/blo...

A chart (drawn with ascii characters) showing a series of timelines and precisely-timed "high" or "low" electrical pulses. Explanation reads: "One bit is sent every 1.25 microseconds. Divide that time into 10 "cycles" of .125 microseconds each." The first chart shows a "1" being sent (high pulse of 7 cycles, low pulse of 3 cycles.) The second chart shows a "0" being sent (high pulse of 2 cycles, low pulse of 8.) A third chart shows the two sequences super-imposed so that it's clear which cycles represent data.

If video game hardware becomes unobtainable for current children, there is no chance of this generation imprinting on it like the last two generations of children have. They will not grow into the adults we have now; the ones spending money on games. Games will end as we know them.

Rolling a D20 for success creates flat randomness. What about 4d6? It would create a strong bell curve, with 14 as the most likely result. Anything 20 or over would be a major success, anything under 10 a real fail. Aside from counting pips on 4 dice, it would feel more intuitive and exciting.

Microsoft losing the plot to the extent that games running on Linux through a compatibility layer are now not only faster but *assumed to be faster* than games running natively on Windows should be an even bigger story than it already is

For gaming, Microsoft views steamOS as the benchmark, and is working to optimize the platform so that steamOS and Windows gaming performance are comparable. Within the next year or two, it believes that Windows will be able to truly compete head-to-head with steamOS in gaming performance on identical hardware due to foundational changes that are being made to the platform in the coming months.

Children shouldn’t use AI until they understand what it is and what it isn’t. It’s being integrated as if it’s a learning tool, when it’s really a productivity tool. Children need to build thinking before outsourcing parts of thinking. Tech literacy before tech dependence.

The Get Smart shoe-phone gag just nails it. As a kid watching reruns, I was like: "It's funny because it's a shoe!" But now, as a media-literate adult with creative degrees and decades of experience in the entertainment industry I can now state with confidence that it's funny because it's a shoe.
