To be super explicit : the folks making fun of AI bro who won't read to his kids assume that reading to your kids IS the value, and I agree. But if that same guy turned around said he used AI to do all his work so he could read to his kids many would be equally mad. YOU have to do the work.

Idle political musing: UBI ultimately wont affect jobs much at all, rather unlock the true humanist reward - usefulness, connectedness and purpose A scant few will never work and … good for them! Feels like yet another level up in civilisation if you ask me—decoupling morality and productivity

That people are having all these weird paeudo-religious conversations about the specialness of work while the actual American president is openly pleasuring himself in front of God and everyone as if to demonstrate that no one will stop him is ... Well, what a time to be alive, eh?

We have such a toxic relationship to work and the "what's it for?" Question. What's funny is that the politicians retiring discussion is the same as the "tech bros won't spend time with their kids" discussion and most of anti-AI politics - all just sacralizing fucking effort over love or enjoyment.

I will say, I have seen enough cases where the big models are capable of revealing latent patterns that I wouldn't have expected to be possible, that it's worth investigating the possibility. But from a position of skepticism to say the least.

Frieren is such a remarkable piece of fantasy writing, the kind of work that builds on generations of cliches to tell very human stories. Highly recommend.

A lot of the AI discussions these days are really reminding me of how many utterly toxic assholes there are in Open Source communities, and how that's totally irrelevant to whether Open Source is a good set of principles or has been a net positive for the world.

This is both true IMO and a really important point to make on bluesky in particular, where the most prominent trans voices definitely aren't the trans teens or their parents.

Something I have become convinced of in recent months is that the AI tools really will drastically change our approach to "software". Not even sure how yet, but the things a barely competent user can build for themselves in 5 minutes are going to keep getting slicker, bigger, and more functional.

Guild Wars 1 really, really obviously is made by ex-Bluzzard devs, it feels like Warcraft 3 at times of art style and interface. And both GW titles make me nostalgic for the Build Engine/Source engine era of PC games, all jagged polygons but relatively high resolution.

Water rights management is far more of an existential issue in places like Arizona and New Mexico than people want to acknowledge, and we could turn off every data center in those states without really touching the problem.

Well I am fully onboard for a program of aggressive environmental regulation, but I do wish we could look at these concerns in context of the whole system. Too often I feel like people want to use water as a knob to turn off datacenter growth while the entire southwestern US is drained dry.

a pluralist society requires actually sharing it with people who are actually different from you, not just who share all your opinions but wear foreign-looking hats and take off for different holidays

Beef is a great example in my mind because we know, have long known, this is a wildly wasteful and unnecessary use of resources to produce nutrition, it's only viable at all if it is isolated to a tiny rich portion of humanity. So it's THE obvious target if the concern is water or climate.

I think it's quite reasonable to say "does the resource consumption match the productivity gains, is this a worthwhile tradeoff" but you rarely see that discussion, partially because we don't know yet. Conversely, we DO know quite a bit about whether ethanol or beef is a good use of water (lol no).

I've been thinking a lot lately about how Richard Stallman and Linus Torvalds have had such an enormous impact on the world, and that's the frame I bring to any thinking about technology. The tools, and how you think about the tools, (re)constructs the world you live in.

I will say I am convinced that OpenAI specifically cannot and should not be trusted with the tools that they are building. It's so obvious they don't recognize the need for any kind of care or responsibility in how they make choices, it's just "what's good for us in this moment."

Looking at the AAA releases of the year, Marathon stands out so much as a bold, risky release from a big studio amongst a sea of well made but unadventurous GTAs and E-Days. Also really stands out that Xbox is retrenching from smaller interesting bets to their own version of Disney-style choices.

I mean, it's a video game, the rules are made up and the points don't matter, so I don't think you can say anything is "secondary" to the experience. Many people play Destiny or Guild Wars mainly for the fashion. But this is an art form with decades of history so you can play what you like.

Because people want that stuff? Demonstrably so, so much that they will pay extra for it? It's one of the most basic human impulses, "I'm spending time in this space and I want it to reflect my personality"

When you look at something like global capital investment I expect it would look even more dramatic. Something opponents of data centers would surely acknowledge in any other context.

The frontier models now have become so capable at truly large and long time-horizon tasks that it is pretty difficult to convey to someone who hasn't used them directly. You can describe it but people won't believe you if they haven't seen it - and it's hard to blame them.

If your issue is with the Israeli government there's the Embassy, and of course DC if you are mad about US government support for Israel. There is no US citizen whom it is appropriate to "protest" for the actions of a foreign government. Otherwise you're doing guilt by association.

Eh, the thing I always think about in this kind of discussion is traffic deaths. Huge mortality figures for decades that society just ... Accepts. Not just government, society as a whole. People can metabolize this kind of horror as part of life - or not. There's no inevitably either way.

Microsoft owns the Windows platform, just commit to PC and cloud games and let Sony deal with the expense of managing console hardware! Whats the business logic behind Xbox as a separate platform? Being mad about losing platform fees to Steam?

The PhysInt thing is kind of a perfect illustration of the problems with Microsoft thinking it's a console platform instead of a game publisher for PC and PS5. They're going to lose money on that deal for the sake of console wars at a time when they supposedly need to improve margins - for what?

A left that could say “the future could be magnificent, and you deserve a share of it” was offering something people could want. Losing that voice to endless fights over whether wanting the future was itself morally suspect was a hell of a loss.

So far my biggest problem with Control Resonant (which I mostly love) is how random success or failure in the big open world encounters can feel. The game spawns tons of dangerous enemies mid-fight and depending on positioning and timing this can be devastating or manageable.

The thing that worries me most lately is that many people who know that “fascism is bad, actually” have also convinced themselves that AI tools must be eschewed as fake or impure. In a self-reinforcing loop, there is relatively little AI tooling and infra by “fascism is bad” folks.

More than anything I really love being able to log in to either of these games and have 10 years of world building and quest lines to play through. There's something charming about enormous shared worlds with long histories like this. No WoW for me though, I can't get over the art style.

I've been running a bit of a bake-off with Elder Scrolls Online and Guild Wars 2, but so far I'm loving both of them for different reasons. GW2 is so much more colorful it wins on the "wandering around" aspect, while ESO has a more quest-centric structure that I also enjoy despite the grey palette.

Control Resonant has been good fun so far, still learning the combat but I think it has potential. And it is so visually stunning, with such strong design. I'm playing with all the ray tracing bells and whistles and feeling like it's worth it for once - it's taken my breath away a couple times.

I know because I did it, I was curious to see how it did, it cost me about a dollar worth of tokens today, probably 5 if you wanted to really polish something up for a wider audience. And this isn't "cognitive surrender," it requires and rewards engagement.

The opportunities for education with LLM are so insanely good I'm kind of shocked they don't get more attention. You can just ask high end model to build you a tutorial for any subject, then build you a test around it, opportunities to practice, positive reinforcement and reminders to fix errors.

I have been thinking a lot lately about how knowing that search engines have an LLM parser, and that LLMs all have web search tools, has changed how I request information from the net. I now ask for the exact thing I want and in 99% of cases the LLM plus search skill gives it to me.

Leaving Jensen to the side (good CEO but I don't think he knows how to speak to normies) the idea that AI leads to some loss of capacity is just bizarre from my experience. I picked up Rust to experiment with Claude output! They are actually quite good at helping you learn, with the right skills.

Every hexagon = 500 MW of data center capacity. Line them up on a grid intensity map and you get a pretty clear picture of where America’s AI buildout is landing on dirty power, and where it isn't.

Yeah to me the relevant word in that sentence is "designed" not mimicry because lol, come on, have you ever seen a child learn and grow? But then if you lean on design you have a problem when the systems behave outside the design constraints and uh ...

Seems like console gaming as we know it may not have a growth story or even a long term future, but portable/mobile/cloud stuff all has room to grow and is relatively insulated from the RAM-pocalypse, for now.
