Dina Bakhoum analyses the Comité, asking whether their work was ‘restoring’ or ‘reinventing’ monuments in Cairo. Most examples have a clear rationale, while some are more stylistic. Dina argues each is a decision with many influences, especially as they were living heritage.

This brings up questions: what should archaeologists choose to preserve? What is lost in the process? Jennifer Cromwell urges us to consider these, but also the importance of archives to help us reconstruct this and other Coptic monuments that no longer exist due to focus on pharaonic material.

In this presentation, Campbell Price argues that the reuse of monuments and masonry highlights a dynamic relationship in ancient Egypt, not necessarily usurping, as these acts of incorporation would reactivate the past through active use!
