Dina Bakhoum analyses the Comité, asking whether their work was ‘restoring’ or ‘reinventing’ monuments in Cairo. Most examples have a clear rationale, while some are more stylistic. Dina argues each is a decision with many influences, especially as they were living heritage.

Dina Bakhoum presents last for #EESFest study day on the Comité de conservation des monuments de l’art arabe. Their aim was to record, monitor and plan repairs for any Arab monuments of Egypt with historic or artistic interest, and Dina focuses on examples of this in Cairo.

Focusing in on the Mamluk Sultans, Doris Behrens-Abouseif traces the modifications made to various shrines and mosques of their predecessors. The range of Sultan’s respectful or disrespectful attitudes are seen to correlate with the preservation vs innovation of these monuments.

This brings up questions: what should archaeologists choose to preserve? What is lost in the process? Jennifer Cromwell urges us to consider these, but also the importance of archives to help us reconstruct this and other Coptic monuments that no longer exist due to focus on pharaonic material.

Our next speaker of #EESFest study day, Jennifer Cromwell discusses EES excavations at Deir el-Bahari and how the Coptic monastery of Apa Phoibammon was cleared with minimal records. Naville makes cursory mention of its removal and Carter took photographic records (see below).

In this presentation, Campbell Price argues that the reuse of monuments and masonry highlights a dynamic relationship in ancient Egypt, not necessarily usurping, as these acts of incorporation would reactivate the past through active use!
