Please submit your small ideas for fixing Britain to the Small-Ideas.org website. It’s a new charitable initiative I’ve set up to try and make sure life’s potholes don’t get ignored. Working with two charities and a cross party panel to turn your ideas into policy then try and make it happen.

So Q2 growth estimate was adjusted up to 0.5% and that’s “good news for Healy”. Yet this will make almost no difference to the borrowing figures for the budget. Jump in energy prices in January forecast and no mention of Healy yet this will be hugely damaging to the budget figures.

The BoEs bond buying programme is needlessly costing government £bns a year, only increasing with every rise in yields. If this was stopped it would restore the chancellor’s headroom and give them enough to raise income tax thresholds by £500 (avoiding adding pensions complications to the tax code)

BBC’s coverage of Reform’s welfare plans is frankly bizarre. Headlines in Ten, leading on some radio networks. Reform are not even the official opposition and the plans have less credibility than Count Binface. Will BBC News do the same for Lib Dem and Greens policy two years out from an election?

Completely agree with this. The arguments against it are mostly that fund managers need to get the best returns but if this were implemented returns on U.K. assets would immediately imcrease. Burnham’s announcement today of a cut in business rates for pubs is eye catching but actually isn’t that expensive. Much like the previous 2 announcements. Plus the costs are focused on the raw figures no knock on impacts.

It’s £0.3bn less. But still £2.7bn more than forecast. The finances really are reliant on a) credibility. If they are then borrowing costs could fall and b) the Iran war. It’s just getting to the point that there just needs to be some good news to allow a few months to make things better

My view on Starmer: how will policy change? Changing leader is irrelevant if they get the policy they want, although with a war in Iran it will get harder and harder to make people feel the change. It won’t improve their comms on what they have done, they’ll continue letting Reform set the narrative

As expected the BoE held rates, shredding their credibility. They actually came up with three scenarios where even the most benign require rate rises this year. They take at least 6 months to really have an impact and in that period inflation is rising. This was a terrible decision by them

theeconomiclens.bsky.social @theeconomiclens.bsky.social · 29/04/2026
The BoE have a credibility problem meaning they need to do more to contain inflation. We know the strait of Hormuz will take 8 months to return to normal when open, so inflation won’t be transitory. Just like in 2022 they will be too late raising rates leaving the UK with higher inflation for longer

If the war continues would it make sense for U.K. to open up oil fields? There would be a 20% global supply drop so it would mean the U.K. could benefit from the tax take and allow more exports (protecting the economy to a certain extent) while not increasing emissions against where they are today
