This person turned off replies so I’m not directly interacting with them, but I feel like it’s important to note that “Glup Shitto” is not “fucked up alien.” It’s a character who originated elsewhere who’s only here so people can recognize them. A completely new character is not a Glup Shitto.

Search for answers

Even though the dispositions system wasn't super impactful and didn't necessarily lead to a bunch of different content or endings, I really appreciated how many ways Pillars of Eternity gave you to be kind. Like even without any further reactivity, it was much more satisfying to be able to choose.

Not directly. And I’m still focused on small skirmishes of 3-4 folks on each side for these specific moves. If I really wanted to make more moves that apply to wide scale *battle* battles, I’d probably lean into how the Bakers did it with the now-abandoned AW hack.

Commanding the Field

When two warriors meet, both armed, they meet as equals. The particular differences between them as warriors, between their positions, and between their weapons might give one an advantage over the other, but still they meet as equals.

Some advantages are so decisive, however, that holding one gives that warrior command of the field.

Decisive advantages:
• If you’re armed and armored, and your enemy is neither, you command the field.
• If you outnumber or outsize your enemy by half again or more, you command the field.
• If you are able and armed to fight at range, but your enemy must cover the ground between you before engaging, you command the field.
• If you are mounted, and your enemy is on foot, you command the field.

I think my problem is this is about 80% hassle right now and 20% good, even though I swear the good part is really good.

This is an animal, usually a horse, outfitted for battle. It has 10 HP and 1 armor. When you take a major rest, increase the cost to care for yourself by 1 Supply.

If you are bonded with it, you can ride it into battle. When you do, you choose +1 options for clash but -1 options for volley. If it falls in battle, ask the GM how this makes you vulnerable.

I literally made it a rule in my game.

Set up bond trouble

When you do this move, take a bond and push a complication related to it. Add one or more costs related to the bond or put it in conflict with another bond the character has. For example, if a PC has been dutifully following the requests of one of their bonded characters, give them a dangerous request or one that goes against their bond with a different character. If an NPC has several positive bonds with PCs, put them in a dangerous situation requiring the PCs to act.

The goal here is not to be mean. You’re following your agenda. You’re raising the stakes by forcing a choice, and you’re playing to find out because you’re letting the player decide what happens next. This also implements the make every bond a threat principle. This is how you make those threats real.

The frequency of this move is dependent on the bonds your players make. The more bonds a player has, especially the more bonds players have with dangerous and powerful characters (or, conversely, with weak and vulnerable characters), the more you should be pushing this move. If players don’t have bonds with such characters, instead push opportunities to make some.

As part of this move, you should also be setting up cuts related to the player’s decision, either for them or the NPC. Following bonds is costly, but ignoring or going against them is potentially even more dangerous.
