Discourse around the last episode of Lanterns reminds me of how when Wandavision ended there was a lot of criticism over the show eventually evolving into a stereotypical super powered fight instead of the initial conceit it began with.

I don't agree. Most horror films are "villain films," ditto crime dramas. Doing that with something established in another brand isn't inherently a bad idea - Sony's Spider-spinoff things were bad because they made bad creative decisions.

The thing about Clayface is that if you look at that original BTAS show, the Clayface episode is really two different stories that collide very late into the narrative. You have a monster story, then a detective story, and they don’t get together till the start of the climax.

Again, easiest comparison is Trump. Slott thought becoming the main Spider-Man writer would make him beloved. But when he learned he couldn’t make people love him, and the love he gets doesn’t fulfill him, he lashes out.
