Chloe holds up a photo and attaches it to the board, then notes down a few bullet points next to it before stepping back to scan it—attention snagging on each of the important events she has identified and following along the connections she found between them. The answer she needs to solve this case must be here. She can nearly taste it. Taking a sip of her coffee, she makes a quiet moan as the flavor bursts over her tongue, then refocuses on her board, tapping a finger on the side of the cup as she thinks.

A breath ruffling her hair and ghosting on the nape of her neck is the only warning she has before two arms encircle her from behind and pull her towards the man at her back. She lets out a huff, but allows herself to be tugged in to the solid warmth of his chest, where she is surrounded by his scent. He smells much too delicious for a work day. It is absolutely absurd that after thousands of years, he still can distract her so easily.

Lucifer kisses her temple, then moves to stand next to her, studying the board. “Any luck with this one?”

For a long time, Lucifer drifted through nothing. A heavy weight was pressed against him, smothering his thoughts, turning any feelings that might have been positive into a sense of dread. It was always like that at some point. Sometimes it lasted only a few moments, sometimes days or years. Hell getting to him in moments of weakness.

He couldn’t open his eyes, but it didn’t really make a difference, did it? He was stuck here. Trapped. Fighting for merely a few precious hours of fresh air, joy, life. And in between…

There was only this.

It always came back to this oppressive darkness. His future endlessly stretching on, with no hope that the darkness would crack. Hell never did. No matter how many times he tried to slip away, it always caught him again.

Eventually the fog lifted some, enough that he gradually realized he might have to actually deal with the world again. The part of him that always kept struggling for freedom was dragging him back into the light despite the futility of it all. He couldn’t help himself; no matter how pointless it was, he tried anyway.

Time to do it again, then. He would claw his way out of hell for another burst of life, for however long it might last. Maybe this would be the time he finally put his foot down…

There was a very important reason to fight through it this time. He couldn’t quite think what, but he felt it—and that helped pulled him on more than anything had in the past. He needed to wake up, even if it was hard.

So he did.

He was so sure he would open his eyes to hell that he couldn’t make sense of what he was seeing at first. Muted yellow lights, pale walls, blooms of color everywhere, a child slumped over the end of a bed. His bed, he realized. And next to him was—

“Chloe.” His voice was thick, sluggish. It matched the way the rest of him felt. But as the seconds slipped by, that heavy, oppressive sense of hell slowly faded away. He wasn’t there—he hadn’t gone back.

Perfect for them.

“Doing this regularly after difficult days, or when life gets busy, or when you just want a moment to reconnect—it can make a huge difference in maintaining intimacy and affection while giving you the chance to let your walls down and rest. You’ll find that you’re better able to handle stressors, together.”

Chloe didn’t know about doing it through massage, but she wanted to have that space with him. For so long she’d held up all her walls, dealing with everything alone. Sharing it with someone… it would be nice.

Liam went on for a minute about creating the right atmosphere through a private space, calm music, and warm lighting. “Scent can help, but we want to keep it light,” he said. “Warmth is also key. Being cold during a massage is no good.”

“It mostly certainly is not,” Lucifer said under his breath.

“I would recommend running sheets or towels in the dryer beforehand if you use them, and making sure your hands are warm before you start. Who’d like to go first?”

“Me,” Lucifer said immediately. “Giving the massage, I mean.” He glanced at her, brow raised. “I always make sure my partner goes first.”

There was zero doubt as to what he meant. She felt something lurch inside.

“Okay.” Liam asked Chloe, “Do you want to remove the robe, or leave it on?”

She hesitated, glancing at Lucifer. This was already going to be intimate. Was taking off the robe going too far? Or would it send the wrong message not to?

His expression showed nothing of what he was thinking. Leaving the choice up to her.

Don’t overthink it.

“Off,” she said.

Dan had to drive, because Chloe hadn’t yet been able to get a replacement after her car exploded. She spent the entire drive gripping her phone, fear mounting with every minute that she didn’t hear from Lucifer. Sophie lived half an hour away; even with Dan using his sirens, it was taking too long to get there. She tried calling Lucifer, but he didn’t answer, and she couldn’t stop thinking the worst.

And then Dan got through dispatch to hear what’d happened. Shots fired with three injured. They didn’t know more than that.

By the time Dan found the park and pulled up as close as he could, her nerves were completely shot, her heart pounding too hard. She was shaky from too much pent-up adrenaline. Before the car was fully at a stop, she opened the door and ran out, scanning every single face for one she knew. Officers were moving around, with an ambulance waiting—but they weren’t there.

Then she saw Trixie sitting on a bench with an officer, and all the breath rushed out of her at once. “Trixie.”

She was already running forward when Trixie lifted her head and jumped off the bench. The officer tried to stop her, but she slipped past and ran to meet Chloe. “Trixie,” Chloe said again, crouching down to envelop her in a hug. There was blood on her clothes. “Are you all right?”

Trixie clutched her tight and started crying. “Mommy. Lucifer got hurt. He was bleeding so much and—and he didn’t get up like last time—”

She went cold. No. He was supposed to be invulnerable again—he couldn’t have gotten hurt like that, he—

She looked around, terrified she’d see his body lying still on the ground. There was no sign of him, but she couldn’t see the whole park. “Are you all right?” she asked again, before she could fall apart right then and there. Trixie. She had to take care of Trixie.

Trixie just kept sobbing into her shoulder.

“Monkey, I know it’s scary, but I need to know if you’re okay. Please just say yes or no.”

“Yes,” she choked out.

They left Dan frowning after them and crossed the remaining distance to the lieutenant’s office. Lucifer opened the door and strode right in without waiting for any sort of invitation, Chloe following just behind. She shut the door.

Cain just watched them, as stoic as ever. It was no wonder he was so stone-faced all the time; he favored rocks, and he’d had millennia to practice indifference. But Lucifer knew now that he was anything but. “Can I help you?” he said, eyes going from him to Chloe.

Lucifer went to one of the chairs placed before the desk and gripped the back, making a show of looking around the office. He’d never been in here before with Cain as its occupant. It was just as dull as the rest of his facade; perfectly boring and organized bookshelves, the desk neat and respectable, every lightbulb and filing cabinet completely average and unremarkable. There wasn’t a single personalized touch in the entire room. Was that part of hiding in plain sight, too, or was the first murderer just completely lacking in any sort of interesting personality?

“So this is what you’ve been doing with your endless existence lately,” Lucifer said. “Masquerading as a tough, weathered, by-the-books cop—and one who’s holed up in an office all day at that. Seems like the most boring option to me, to be perfectly honest. If you need tips on how to enjoy immortality, I’d be happy to help, Cain.”

For another beat, his expression remained impassive, not a single flicker of surprise showing. And then he leaned back, something in the air shifting. He wasn’t going to deny it—a pity. Lucifer had almost been looking forward to that verbal sparring match. “So you finally figured it out,” Cain said. “Took you long enough.”

Chloe had been right before in that he wasn’t impressed with their last activity for the day, but not because it took place outside.

“This is just sad,” he told her, as they settled on the picnic blanket. “Especially for a decent resort like this one. They couldn’t come up with something better?”

They were on the beach, the blanket held down by weighted wicker baskets that were more for decoration than anything. Electric candles stood bunched together on two sides, with their dinner under cloches on two individual serving trays. And that was it.

They hadn’t even gotten out there until the sun was already down. Most of the illumination came from string lights nearby; they weren’t all that close to the water.

“What else is there even to do?” Chloe asked, glancing at him. She sat easily enough on the blanket, one hand braced behind her, face turned up a little into the breeze. Her hair was in a ponytail, loose strands gently getting blown about. Ever since the meditation class, she’d seemed genuinely relaxed like she’d hardly ever been since getting here, and now was no different. He wasn’t sure what had changed, but he sorely hoped it lasted. “It’s a beach picnic. We’re on the beach. There is a picnic. That’s all there is to it.”

“Very wrong, Detective,” he said. “A romantic beach picnic is all about the ambience, and this one is sorely lacking.”

“Like you have so much experience with that,” she teased. “Take people for romantic picnics all the time, do you?”

He scoffed. “I don’t need experience to know it could be better.”

“How, then?” she asked. Something in her countenance changed; she straightened, the teasing grin disappearing, and fidgeted with the tray nearest her. But she didn’t seem to be getting tense again either. “If you were in charge of setting it up, what would you do differently?”

He hesitated then. There was something about the way she’d said that, like it was less a challenge and more a meaningful question. Why?

She stared down at the mess of cheese and butter and pasta and reigned in her temper for the umpteenth time. Human food was disgusting, and it kept getting messy and filling the room with a horrid burning smell that reminded her of hell.

The things she was willing to do for her children…

She didn’t know how humans lived like this, or why anyone would possibly think this was an indicator of love. But Lucifer insisted on living on Earth now, she didn’t know anything about what they considered love, and so…

She frowned at the noodles. That television had highlighted the cheese, but there wasn’t much in there. She dumped in more chunks until the noodles were barely visible and shoved it all in the oven yet again.

Too long. It kept taking too damn long to cook. She cranked up the temperature again and went about searching through Lucifer’s cabinets for the third time, feeling like something was wrong here. Humans loved food—the television featured it nonstop, and that store had been full of all different kinds—but even though he had an entire kitchen, there was hardly any food in it. Mostly liquids and a few packages that she almost mistook for trash at first. Clearly he never made cheesy noodles himself, so maybe this would actually help, despite her mounting misgivings.

That acrid stench hit her nose again. Ugh. She opened the oven, waved away a cloud of smoke, and pulled out the noodles.

It didn’t look anything like the ones on the screen, but this was the third time she’d tried. Clearly his oven was malfunctioning. What did she know? Maybe it was fine the way it was.

She took it upstairs and presented it to Lucifer, who was stretched out on the couch, staring at the ceiling. He looked at the offering. “What on Earth is that…?”

Chloe barely felt the impact as she slammed into the ground. She was only dimly aware of the blast of heat rolling over her, or the debris raining down, or the ringing in her ears that muffled all other sound. Pain pricked through her, but that, too, hardly registered; it was like someone had wiped out all her thoughts, her connection to her body. Everything was too distant, too difficult to track in her own mind.

She tried to get up. Tried to shake it off. Tried to make any sense of what was happening, but she couldn’t. Her brain was stuffed full of cotton, floating somewhere outside her body. All she knew was that something was wrong—but even that, too, she couldn’t focus on. It simply was.

Time stretched on and on, as if she was caught between waking and sleeping, knowing there was more to the world but unable to reach it.

She thought she heard shouting, but it was quickly lost as the ringing in her ears grew and grew. Her awareness of anything around her was receding all the more, and then that, too, was gone entirely.

“What the hell is that supposed to be?” Chloe asked, glancing over at his canvas. The man sitting a few feet away raised his brow their way, probably at her choice of words and utterly unsupportive tone.

“It’s you,” he said, clearly miffed. “Taking down—your enemies—with style.”

She studied the black lines outlining half stick figures, with smears of color to define her clothing and very blue eyes and blond hair. The figure that was supposed to be her had her hands on her hips with a smile and slanted brows, which reminded Chloe immediately of the devil emoji even though there were no purple horns in site. The figure on the ground was dotted in red with a very anguished expression.

“That looks nothing like me.”

“I think I captured your demeanor quite well, to be honest.”

“We’re supposed to be doing something romantic. Painting me like I live to smite my enemies is not romantic.”

“Depends on who you ask, I think,” he said, smirking slightly. “I, for one, find it very appealing. Taking down enemies could be great for foreplay.”

She rolled her eyes. “Still not romance. Here.” She put pink paint on a brush, reached over, and drew hearts around the edges. “More cutesy, less murder-y.”

He let out a laugh. “I appreciate your artistic touch.”

He appreciated it a lot less when she drew a heart on his cheek, too. “Det—darling!”

“Yes?” she said sweetly. He’d flinched away, barely keeping from getting some on his suit, so it was less than perfect. And she loved every dot of that pink paint.

“The paint is supposed to go on the canvas,” he said, as if mocking her. “Body paint is only fun when it’s the edible kind.”

“Gross,” she said, but she was smiling. “I think it’s cute.”

“I’m not bloody cute,” he grumbled. And then he eyed her.

Oh no.

She jumped off her stool just as he lunged forward with his brush. “Come here, darling,” he crooned, pure wickedness in his eyes.
