Chloe started to stir, little movements that had her pressing even closer to him for a moment. He was already smiling when she opened her eyes. They settled on his face, and then she smiled, too. “Hi.”

“Good morning again, love.” He kissed the top of her head.

Her eyes shone at that. “Did you get more sleep? What time is it?”

“Yes, and just past ten.”

“Trixie isn’t up yet?”

“Not that I heard.”

“Mmm. I should go check on her, make breakfast…”

“For me as well, yes? Since I do believe you threatened to pamper me all day.”

Her smile only grew. “Yes. For you, too.”

She started to get up, which left Lucifer torn, because he didn’t want her to. He would have been fine with the two of them staying in bed like that all day, whether it meant getting breakfast or not. He had to resist the urge to pull her back down, missing her warmth the moment she moved away from him. If not for Trixie, he might have insisted on another hour under the covers together.

“What do you want to eat?” she asked, running her hand over her hair to smooth it out. “Anything in particular?”

“Whatever you’d like is fine. Just make it extra special for me.” He beamed at her, lounging languidly back to emphasize how much he was willing to be taken care of today.

“You know, that’s not as specific a request as you might think. Deciding to burn your toast or add a bucket of salt to your eggs would also count as making it special.”

He just grinned lazily up at her. “I don’t think you’ll do anything like that, since you love me now.”

Chloe snorted. “Yeah, that doesn’t mean never doing anything to annoy you. Since you’re new to the concept, let me be the first to tell you that people in love intentionally annoy each other sometimes. You should know, really. You’ve already been accomplished at doing both whether you realized it or not.”

He laughed. “Annoy you, maybe, but ruin perfectly good eggs for no reason? Now that, I’d never do.”

A ringing started up in Lucifer’s ears as he strode down the path, hardly seeing it, driven entirely by a need to move. Walk. Run. Fly. Phantom muscles pulled at his back, trying to call on wings he no longer had. The burst of divinity he’d dispelled was only making it worse.

Drive. He was halfway to the front of the resort before he realized he was aiming for the valet and his Corvette, desperate for the feel of a road disappearing at speed under his tires and the heady rush of wind in his face.

He had to get away. Had to put distance between him and Chloe and the nightmare unfolding in that room.

Why did it have to happen now? That blasted divinity he hadn’t experienced in eons, ruining the one truly good thing he’d managed to find in all his life, just when he’d heard those beautiful words that changed everything. I want you.

Somehow, incredibly, Chloe had really told him she wanted to be with him, had kissed him back just as eagerly as he’d kissed her, had wanted to sleep with him and be together after. Everything he’d been so sure he’d never get, things he’d never known to want until now.

Minutes. It had lasted only minutes before it was all torn away.

That was what he got for thinking he could ever be that happy.

“Can I help you, sir—?”

“Keys,” he snapped, the sound abruptly pulling him back to his surroundings. He was in the reception area, the valet looking startled. His shirt was still untucked and unbuttoned. “Now.”

“Can I get your name?”

He couldn’t even say it. He hated that name right now.

“Morningstar,” someone else said for him. He glanced over and saw Mandi, the person who’d first shown them to their suite. “Are you okay?”

“Just give me the keys. I’ll get it myself.”

The valet fumbled to hand them over.

The moment he’d realized everything had fallen apart kept replaying in his head as he went to find his car.

The light of the full moon shines through the curtains of the penthouse, throwing a stripe of rumpled bedding into harsh relief. The pool of silver from it steadily shifts as the minutes tick away, each moment illuminating a new sliver of his life while sending another into shadow, reminding him that soon he will no longer live here, but in the home he and Chloe purchased in Santa Monica. It’s still new. This thing—this them, but it has a shape he is learning to wrap his tongue around.

Now the shape will have a house full of the three—soon to be four—of them.

It feels odd to move while the oddness itself feels odd as well. To leave the penthouse is to leave the first home he chose for himself. But what is a handful of years in one place compared to eons with no home at all? To move should be easy. And he isn’t selling his place, but simply acknowledging that it’s not the best place for children.

Beside him in the bed Chloe turns, making a small grumbling noise as she attempts to get comfortable. Though Lucifer can’t see it now, her stomach is round with visible proof of their daughter, and he hopes he is doing the right thing, while fearing he is not.

How can he, the Devil, be a dad? What does he know of parenting or of tiny urchins? Of breaking time loops?

In the light of day, Chloe's steadfast faith in him—in them—and her reminders that he won’t be alone are enough to allay most of his misgivings. He will have Chloe and Beatrice. They are a family, soon to be a larger one. While it is another oddness to apply the word family to him after so long without, it’s one which fills him with warmth.

At night, however, he worries.

She paced back and forth in the hospital parking lot, glancing at the doors with every turn, occasionally stopping to glare at a random window on the third floor. She had no idea which one was Chloe’s, but it was one of them, so she took the chances and hoped she got it right eventually. None of this would be happening right now if not for her.

Even right this second, Lucifer could be sending himself to hell for her. Dying—for her. He could be giving up everything to save one measly human life, more than that human could ever hope to understand. He wasn’t risking just his life—he was risking being trapped in hell permanently. Nothing she said would convince him it wasn’t worth it, and she couldn’t stand to watch him do it, let alone help.

But as it turned out, waiting around somewhere else while knowing he was going through with it anyway was even worse. She’d come back here without them knowing, unable to help herself, and now that he was somewhere in that building enacting such a horrible plan…

She couldn’t stand by and do nothing, either. If there was anything she could do to make sure he survived, she would do it.

So she went to go find him. The room right below Chloe’s, as he’d said.

She paused just outside the door as she heard a flat, incessant tone coming from the room. And then Maze saying, “This isn’t right. Something’s wrong in hell.”

“What?” The therapist.

“He’s stuck. Trapped in one of those cells. That’s why we can’t revive him.”

A flash of dread stuck her. Too late—she was too late. Lucifer was already dead, already back in hell, and now he was stuck—he wasn’t coming back. His plan was going to fail.

“Okay, so then what do we have to do to bust him out?”

“Someone needs to go down there and pull him out. I’d go, but… I can’t.”

No, Maze couldn’t follow. She listened as the doctor offered to do it instead, as if she had the slightest chance of being able to navigate hell as a human.

Chloe holds up a photo and attaches it to the board, then notes down a few bullet points next to it before stepping back to scan it—attention snagging on each of the important events she has identified and following along the connections she found between them. The answer she needs to solve this case must be here. She can nearly taste it. Taking a sip of her coffee, she makes a quiet moan as the flavor bursts over her tongue, then refocuses on her board, tapping a finger on the side of the cup as she thinks.

A breath ruffling her hair and ghosting on the nape of her neck is the only warning she has before two arms encircle her from behind and pull her towards the man at her back. She lets out a huff, but allows herself to be tugged in to the solid warmth of his chest, where she is surrounded by his scent. He smells much too delicious for a work day. It is absolutely absurd that after thousands of years, he still can distract her so easily.

Lucifer kisses her temple, then moves to stand next to her, studying the board. “Any luck with this one?”
