If my calculations are correct then I am one year older than Seven who would be 29 in the present day based on the information in A Life in the Day of Benjamin Andre released in 2003 when I was 7 years old Allcomingtogether.gif

Most popular number to name your child after (Andre 3000, George Costanza, plus a former study mate of mine also named Seven)

His second 20/20 installment in 2013 wasn’t nearly as well-received as the first, then a few years later the Britney/Janet controversies turned him into an easy target for people who think disliking celebrities is political praxis

The emotional appeal of their music to me has always felt like a kind of “straight male bromance” that inspires a sense of solidarity in the reciprocating audience. “We’ll see things they’ll never see/You and I are gonna live forever”

Marxist-Poptimist @theben52s.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Musicianship? I always thought their early working-class appeal was that they played like a competent bar band with the layering and volume of shoegaze but without focusing on soundscaping beyond being big and loud. “A sound so void of finesse it turned out unstoppable”

They’re one of the last rock bands I can’t imagine someone my age who grew up on pop music *not* knowing about and at least a few hits of theirs. AM was EVERYWHERE and in many ways still is with multi-billion streams these days, it’s probably the biggest album of 2013 these days

None of their songs outnumber “Seven Nation Army” in Spotify streams but they have at least 4 or 5 well about “Fell In Love With a Girl” which is what I mean by The White Stripes feeling less “canonised” than The Strokes in the present

Most of “the last big rock bands” of my adolescence were shaped by The Strokes (Killers, Kings of Leon, Arctic Monkeys) or wouldn’t even exist without them, fans of those bands getting back to the source material has made the Strokes bigger in the streaming era

Marxist-Poptimist @theben52s.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Not really, I actually think The Strokes are bigger *now* than they were 20-25 years ago when rock critics really wanted Is This It to Nevermind the mainstream rock landscape, it somehow feels like it did in hindsight

Marxist-Poptimist @theben52s.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Yeah maybe I’m wrong since Is This It’s “classic” status with the public feels stronger with every passing year, I am a bit surprised that it’s up against the Stripes instead, since their following actually feels weaker now than the Strokes despite being the biggest garage rock band at the time

Part of me wishes YHF was held off until a 2002 round because without it in the picture the 2001 aoty feels just a bit less obvious, it’d still be my #1 for ‘02 but feel like it could more easily lose to another rock critic favourite I find overrated like Songs For the Deaf, so worth more of a fight

I can confirm that I find their 1999-2002 work the easiest to appreciate seperate from my annoyance at the overplay of “Can’t Stop” and “Californication” in my life, with the only song of their I’ve always loved even when I hated their existence (“Otherside”)

Just Add Reverb-music got really out of hand in the ‘2010s after people over-corrected on Slowdive and that War on Drugs album came out

Feels unaware of how anti-art-but-woke its own framework is. We can all want to and sometimes even need to move on from a peronally- formative artist but whatever you latch onto next will offer you different thrills and insights and that’s also a very good thing

“There’s always another artist just as talented who can fill this role your cancelled fave does” has always irked me a bit because people’s artistic skills and worldviews are always going to be different from one another independently of their own morals and politics

That same week I saw people hyping up the new Superman movie as anti-Israel by some of her critics and thought “yeah watching the newest popcorn superhero movie is the real praxis, isn’t it?”

And none of the worst things she said about the left in that post were as damning as her correctly describing the Israeli public after 10/7 as obsessed with “unstoppable lust for revenge”

Like I would have to tried not to have sounded like I was blaming people for being too outraged about it too, but I also have a very low gore tolerance and don’t think self-harming oneself or spamming another’s mentions as punishment is a good idea either

It’s like how the re-ignited backlash to ContraPoints last year was erupted from her responding to the fandom-as-politics crowd demand that every essayist must make ContentTM about the worst moral catastrophe of our lives to be proven non-complicit in genocide

If I described someone as being a combination of Eminem and Kanye West you would probably think they sound like a good rapper. But actually, the person has Kanye West's politics and Eminem's race, and it's Adolf Hitler. And the fact you thought they sounded cool shows how normalised fascism is
