Well done Emley Moor! 10 on the Toniben Scale! I firat remember watching this as a bemused teenager. Jonathan Meades called it 'heavy entertainment' and I was in love with the surrealist style of it. Looking back, this might be where my love of hauntology began youtu.be/WWRmBXhC7Cs?...

@jasonhazeley.bsky.social Hi, just wanted to say thanks for the recommendation of You Could Do Something Amazing With Your Life on the OGWN podcast the other day. What an astonishing read. I think it's going to stay with me for a very long time. Looking forward to Felled.

I come here infrequently but when I do it's always nice that I seem to have picked up someone new and hopefully interesting. I'm afraid I am, however, not that interesting, but I do enjoy a good faff around with something. This evening I dismantled, cleaned, restrung and re- set up my telecaster.

Leave the 'smart' bullshit to your phone (and be rightly suspicious of that). If you want a great watch for being brutally accurate, indestructible, and all round brilliant, try a Casio G-Shock. If you really need all the health monitoring stuff, Garmin do great ones. Proper watches are much better.

Trying to promote my own hauntological folklore-and-landscape-based media work on here while everyone I follow is right now glued to Penda's Fen on BBC4 is probably wasted effort I think...

Agree with this. Also, audio-only is still seen as the poorer cousin of video because when you've got only some sound to listen to then WHERE DO YOU POINT YOUR EYES? Free improv guitarist Derek Bailey said he hated recorded music because 'what am I supposed to do, just stare at the wall?'

I visited the Derwent Valley reservoir today, which is where 617 Squadron practiced the dambusters raid, and holy moly, the bravery of those young men. The sculpture erected in their memory is absolutely terrific as well. The light beams under the plane are incredibly well imagined and rendered.

I was lucky enough to see it in Bayeux about ten years ago. A magnificent graphic novel. Alan Moore would have been proud to have written it I reckon.

Aged about 16 I was in a punk band called Rabid Snail. Our youthy was really supportive and a volunteer drove us a 150 mile round trip to a battle of the bands event in Worthing. One band had pulled out, leaving just us and a quite good indie 5-piece who covered Radiohead's The Bends. We were shit.

Not sure why it's taken me so long to get to this as MC's book on Hauntology was instantly a favourite. Hiding in a shed at work from the rain, pooches for moral support.

I also watched Huey from the Fun Lovin' Criminals jump into the crowd and punch a man clean out. One punch. Carried out by security to an ambulance. He threw a bottle at the singer mid-song and it hit him square in the face.

Die as in how stand-ups die? Shed Seven at the fag-end of Britpop, an audience of barely 50 in a venue for 500, the same group of ten scallies 'crowd' surfing each other across the sad-looking audience (my school German teacher was there, watching from the side of the stage, fully stoned);

Amazon, with their streaming telly channel, could do a series where they adapt all the books, in order, set in their original time. I think this would be Good to Watch. Although some of the books are admittedly a bit narratively naive and of their time, etc.

Do you remember when social media was terrible and we wished it wasn't a thing? Be careful what you wish for. The trouble is that a lot of indie creative folks rely on it as a primary platform for promoting their stuff Also, old school social media like Bluesky is now an artisanal endeavour.

I'm super grateful that the Met Office app noisily texted me at, let's see, QUARTER PAST THREE this morning to warn me of fog until 8am. Ladies and gents I have looked out of the window and also there is no fog.

For years I've thought there should be an app for trades to review customers so that others can avoid the weird/mental/disturbed/pervert/religious extremist types. I have met so, so many flat out mental, weird and dangerous people I could have avoided.

In the 1980s the USA was having a puritan time of it, automobile-wise. If you look closely, the DeLorean's dashboard in Back to the Future was painted so the speedo looked like it could accommodate 88mph. In truth all dashboards then were mandated to stop at 80.

I've actually got a PhD and not sure how they're mostly funded, tbh. I got mine when there was a glut of scholarships at the uni where I was zero-hours teaching (and where I did my undergrad).

When I worked on operator services a colleague had the most amazing mental arithmetic skills. He could add/multiply/work out the square root of the telephone numbers in the time it took to type them in. I thought he was pulling my leg until one day I took a calculator into work and, my god. Skills.

Ex-BT international operator reporting. Leading digit tells the exchange where to send the call: preceding 0 for out of current area code; preceding 1 for operator services (100, 144, 155 (where I worked)); 2-8 - local lines within your area code; 9 - emergency services. Designed for exchange speed.

These live radio feature docs I make are done with realtime music improvisation with amazing musicians responding to the material they hear. The interview clips are pre-edited and cued on Ableton Live so the shape of the show is set, and the live Announcer and poet(s) are cued in by me "conducting".

The last episode of the Goodwin Sands Oral History project is up. This isn't your usual dull and worthy oral history ep - this is a hauntological radio feature doc about the sea and how it changes us. Broadcast from a wrecked ship in the Channel, it was recorded live in 2024.

Let me tell you something, a friend of mine with MS had her nurse specialist in clinic asking ChatGPT to help choose her next medication cycle. These medications can be dangerous and have risks, not least that they might not work and you relapse and accrue disability.

Why would anyone be using that service to do research when it is often wrong (sometimes wildly wrong), and you have the entire Internet available like a giant bookshelf? Pull the books down, read, interpret and understand for yourself. Like a grown up.

I've found that applying for arts funding costs a great deal of time, and if you worked out the hourly rate and the chances of actually being awarded anything, you might as well not bother. So I don't any more. I just make some work which (hopefully) sells and use that to fund the stuff that won't.
