#ArtAdventCalendar day 20: a #FolktaleWeek2024 piece. I thought I would tell another Canadian #folktale about a flaming ghost ship or strange light phenomenon which has been observed in New Brunswick in the Baie des Chaleurs. There are a few different versions of the folklore but the one I like is
My multimedia artwork is on a toned cyanotype of a misty bay with forest across the water and cloudy or misty skies. In black I Lino block printed a three-masted ship in grey, with Jolly Roger flag in black, overprinted with flames in reds and orange. Hand-lettered script in black there is a stanza of the poem, “This is the tale of the phantom light
That fills the mariner's heart, at night,
With dread as it gleams o'er his path on the bay,
Now by the shore, then far away,
Fierce as the flame in sunset skies,
Cold as the winter moon that lies
On the Baie des Chaleurs.” from ‘The Phantom Light Of the Baie Des Chaleurs’ by A. W. H. Eaton

Another recent read I loved was Bound by Maddie Ballard from @theemmapress.bsky.social …a beautiful sewing memoir! The writer reflects on relationships, identity and more as she looks back on learning to sew and the various projects she has completed since. #booksky 💙📚

Eden by Sonia Overall - what a brilliant book. Three narrative threads bring together a literature professor (Penelope), Hemingway and the voice of one of his female characters. Absolutely loved it and was gripped by Pen’s story… #booksky 💙📚

Jacques Roubaud, whose books in translation were published by @dalkeyarchive.bsky.social, has died. 'Form and Love in the Poetry of Jacques Roubaud' written by @theapetrou.bsky.social was published earlier this year. The Great Fires of London, tr. by Dominic Di Bernardi is well worth reading.

New on the blog today, I've written about THE DOOR by Magda Szabó (tr Len Rix). An extraordinary portrayal of a complex, co-dependent relationship between a Hungarian writer and her enigmatic, unpredictable housekeeper. Phenomenal stuff! #BookSky 💙📚 jacquiwine.wordpress.com/2024/11/12/t...

The Door by Magda Szabó (tr. Len Rix)
First published in Hungarian in 1987 and translated into English by Len Rix in 2005, The Door is the third book I’ve read by Magda Szabó, and it’s very much of a piece with Iza’s Ballad and Katalin…
