Grief Is Not Shelf Stable
Jamez Terry
cover: two hands carving an apple doll face

IV.

I confess: I always hated
your applehead dolls, creepy
collection of goblin faces that resist
decomposing as an apple should
I confess: I want to make more,
give every one your name,
your crooked grin, your ears,
make a version of you stable
enough to last
I confess: I want to smash them,
expose what sweetness
is left inside,
touch it with my tongue

For #linger, here's my prose poem "The Pain", published in @theamazine.bsky.social in July 2023 #vss365 theamazine.com/2023/07/15/t...
The pain

After 3 long years, my back pain and I finally seperated. It had been a troubled relationship, going back and forth, on and off. After I had announced the seperation, my back pain refused to believe it, clinging to me and after I definitively told her it was over, she lingered there for some time. Finally, the news settled in and she had to accept it. My back pain finally moved out and now lives in Bremen.
I rejoiced for half a day. Then my leg started to hurt.

Learn more about the framing of our 125th issue – edited by our Deputy Editor, Vamika Sinha – in its Editorial, titled 'Living in the Melancholony', a term used to describe how we cope and feel in this shared oppressive world order. buff.ly/mFuzsMh
Black text on cream background: ‘The melancholony is a deeply heartbreaking place. But it has not taken our languages yet. It has not taken our capacity to write, to record, to fight, to feel. It has not fully dismembered our peoples, our cultures, our narratives, our love stories (is there any greater magic than the tenacity of love?).
The melancholony breaks our hearts, but it has not erased us.
We are still here.’
