ICYMI: More than any politician or journalist or celebrity, I believe Bob Siegel holds the secrets to a better San Francisco. I dug a little deeper into his stewardship and how he got here. (Please read & share with any cynical friends who have given up on this city.) 🌁 ❤️

“Stop asking permission.” “Strike up a conversation with anyone.” “Keep moving forward.” This retired teacher made an urban trail go viral. He won’t stop until the whole city is discovering San Francisco. Your feel-good story for the weekend. #RetirementGoals www.sfchronicle.com/totalsf/arti...

The story of Manzanar and the World War II incarceration camps takes on even more meaning today, when innocent people are once again being rounded up by government agents for racist, inhumane reasons. I hope this project helps shed more light on this story: sabr.org/baseball-at-...

Today SABR launched an incredible new book and companion website on Baseball at Manzanar: How We Played the Game, 1942-1945. It’s the story of 120,000 Japanese Americans who were removed from their homes after Pearl Harbor and forced to live at remote incarceration camps: sabr.org/baseball-at-...

Your bus operator knows the difference between real "partnership" and marketing ploy

That Mack @thatmc.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Instead they will give people who have already demonstrated that they are not cost-conscious a little fare money, and they will claim to care about the transit agencies they are working feverishly to replace, making mobility worse for all.

Or, Waymo could proactively make its app tell users whose requested trip is easily served by a public transit route when the next bus or train is departing from the nearby stop. I feel this should be compulsory!

That Mack @thatmc.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
If Waymo wanted to invest in a vibrant and sustainable future of mobility, Measures RTM and H would make good use of many millions of dollars that Waymo could easily give. These are the measures which will guarantee useful and efficient public transit service.

I find it enormously frustrating that Waymo is scoring PR points for itself by pretending to support transit usage. Get my bus off your website, jerks.

Waymo is not making mobility better in San Francisco, it is making it worse. Now they are bringing a “partnership” with transit by offering to pay some of their customers transit fares if they ride on public transit within an hour of their Waymo ride. waymo.com/blog/2026/09...

But most of all, Waymo, and all the other ride hail services (lyft, uber, zoox) as well as the delivery services (doordash, ubereats, ect) contribute massively to congestion on the streets. Waymo’s are glaringly obvious in this regard, but the problem is all of it.

That Mack @thatmc.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Waymo makes transit service worse in San Francisco. Their vehicles block bus zones, double park where the bus cannot get by, get stuck and generally suck. They are also getting noticeably worse as time goes on and the company pushes the boundaries of what it can get away with.

It would be so easy to reclaim the parking on the south side of Bosworth! the bulb out at Diamond is a pain point, unfortunately. I think the most effective bus only lane be the left one. I would want to eliminate the stop at Lippard but that’s fine!

Unfortunately post collision investigations are heavily focused on if the operator had any chance of preventing the incident, and only after that are other factors given consideration.

That Mack @thatmc.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
They will have been subjected to a drug and alcohol test, and someone in a video review booth will carefully check how often the operator made traffic checks, how many seconds elapsed between mirror checks, and how they responded to the aftermath.

That Mack @thatmc.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Not so. The transit operator will be subject to an investigation to determine if there was any way they could have prevented it.

That’s part of what made me want the opportunity to participate in the heritage weekend as a historic coach operator. When people see these fantastic old vehicles, they stop in their tracks and smile, wave, and take photos. It’s distilled transit joy.

That Mack @thatmc.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
As a Muni Operator, one of my goals is to spread a bit of the joy and happiness that I feel as part of San Francisco’s transit system. I want people to be smiling when they step off my coach at their destination.

That Mack @thatmc.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
People come out to show their love of transit. It feels spectacular to those of us who have made it our vocation to deliver the service. Too often it’s easy to feel unappreciated as a transit operator.

As a transit fan, heritage weekend is always something I look forward to. The old vehicles ooze with class and character. What I love most about the festival is how it brings out a joyful spirit alongside public transit.

MUNI Bus Stop-- for transit month! I love the iconic wavy MUNI bus shelters. This was based on a photo reference that I came back to a year later, from when I was working on the 50 Views from Fulton series. So this is somewhere on Fulton along the edge of Golden Gate Park, probably in the 30's.
