I've heard good things about the pilot vanishing point but I've never had the chance to hold one to try it out. Maybe I'll get the chance at the pen show. I'll see if the TWSBI Vac is significantly bigger than my swipe and try that too.

What would you write if you had to combine a reluctant sorcerer, the end of the world, and an unopened letter into a short story? Or a box of killer wasps, the north pole of the moon, a sentient lump of yogurt? Those are not the prompts that ended up in this anthology. But they could have been. 🪐📚💙

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

One and a half more squares down. These are seriously addictive once you've got the grid down. #embroidery #blackwork #stitching
Closeup of four squares of embroidery done in thread that shifts from magenta to teal. Lower right square is in progress in a design reminiscent of the Star Trek computer lines. Lower left looks like a spirograph and I totally won at thread chicken by making the colors match up. Upper right and left are in the previous photo, an optical illusion and a design of different diamonds that resemble stained glass.

A slow Saturday morning stitching and drinking tea is exactly what I needed this week. Tea is la sombra from @white2tea.bsky.social. Blackwork pattern is 100 Dinky Adventures in Geometry by The Steady Thread. #teasky #embroidery
Tea table showing a small white teapot with a skull for the knob on a white ceramic tray. It's surrounded by a glass pitcher filled halfway with a golden tea. An articulated porcelain dragon tea pet curls around the base of the pitcher. On the other side of the teapot a celadon snail and tiny glass ladybug. Foreground outside the tray a white handleless teacup sits on a blue tea towel. Vertical photo showing one half of an embroidery hoop. On evenweave linen a series of squares embroidered in color changing thread that shifts from magenta to purple to teal to dark blue. Three of the squares are filled in with different geometric blackwork patterns. Top a pattern of diamonds, middle an optical illusion of three posts, and bottom a more classic blackwork pattern of interlocking bone shapes. All are in the same color shifting threads. I'm using this small project to get some practice color planning with color shifting threads, and also to get an idea of how much thread each box uses to plan for a larger version using only one thread color.

I was taught that ort was a very old word related to scraps or leftovers. But there's also a bacronym that says it stands for "ratty old threads." It is unrelated to Oort clouds (the leftover bits at the edges of the solar system) because those were named for a dutch astronomer Jan Oort. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I know that Ort jars are common among needle pointers as a kind of evidence of craft. A combined private measure of how much time you've spent and of the different projects you've made even if you've given them away? But also practical because otherwise the ort gets *everywhere*...

I think she had a big mason jar by her chair where she collected them too. I assume it got emptied into there? I don't actually know. Come to think of it, we didn't find them when I cleaned out her craft closet... Huh. A question for Mom.

Did anyone else's grandmother keep an ort-catcher like this? Mine called hers a "thread pig" and it was lined with velvet. I just made this one from memory because I couldn't find any details or patterns online. Ort is the #embroidery term for all the little snipped off bits of leftover thread.
A square object made of blue fabric with white spotted striped, fabric folded like an envelope with an opening diagonally down the center. A tangle of threads is peeking out from the opening and you can just see that the object is lined with another fabric, a black and white flannel. It is laid on a light blue fabric and measures about two inches by two inches.
