So, that's six years of my life on two very niche films 😂. For those keeping track, that’s one 400-page making-of tome (in two different languages) which no one read 🤣, and two physical film releases. Time for this film historian to broaden their scope!

For the Guyver: Dark Hero release I provided a co-commentary (and I actually got to chuck in some film theory), despite being left off all promo material and not mentioned on the packaging. I also still don’t have a copy of the film 🤦🏻‍♂️🤷 Anyway, I'm glad people are liking the release 👌🏻

Also for those unaware, I’m on both recent Guyver film releases. On Unearthed Films’ The Guyver 4K, I moderated the director’s commentary, interviewed the late SMG (🤘🏻), provided commentary on some of the b-roll, and wrote a booklet for the release. I think I got a producer’s credit 🤔.

With the new blu-ray release of Guyver: Dark Hero (and given that I haven’t promoted it in a while), may I point you in the direction of my (now) three-year-old book on the making of both Guyver films? It’s not perfect, but it’s mine and I learnt a lot from this project!

The “I demand Blood and Bone 2” quote 👌🏻

I am not. I’ve already hit my limit with academics 😑😑

We got a blu in the U.K., but it’s very barebones (no chapter selection). It would be nice to see VS put it out 👍🏻

Dom O’Brien @thatdomobrien.bsky.social · 17/09/2026

It’s a real shame people are only finding out about this from the extras. I released (about 3 years ago) an in-depth making of book about both Guyver films which covers this very topic. Ah well, at least people are enjoying the disc 😊👍🏻

Dom O’Brien @thatdomobrien.bsky.social · 15/09/2026

Amazing! Maybe I can come to the screening? I’m fully aware my previous message was a little grammatically incorrect (I’m tired 😅). Be kind to yourself. Rest when you need to and don't feel guilty about having to rest. You've got this 🤘🏻

Dom O’Brien @thatdomobrien.bsky.social · 15/09/2026

Having been there myself for several years, I know (as hard as it is) the best thing is to do is be kind to yourself. Those that care/matter will support you. Here if you ever want to yap about anything (especially comfort films), Ewan 👍🏻.

The Toy Robot release of GUYVER: DARK HERO Blu-ray is the dream release I've always wanted: 3 tracks, 70 minute making-of, and awesomely, an hour of raw fly-on-the-wall behind the scenes footage! The picture quality is what it is considering the film was shot on Super-16 and finished for video.

Holy shit it's finally in my possession! THE GUYVER 2: DARK HERO (1994) on Blu-ray from #toyrobotvideo, directed by Steve Wang!

So, ADHD medication is a wild ride! This is going to be a long few days!

Dom O’Brien @thatdomobrien.bsky.social · 06/09/2026

It's not awful. Personally, I was not a fan when I first saw it, but some elements do look good. Perspective is key here. The elements weren't good enough for a remaster, so AI upscaling was used for the enhanced version (which has some SFX tweaks too). It's the best we are likely to get.

I love that you guys in the US like this show as well 😀🙌🏻

Looks like the Guyver: Dark Hero Blu is getting some decent reviews, even with the controversial use of AI on the enhanced version. The original version is on the first disc (so that’s a plus) and Steve seems chuffed with how it’s all turned out. Nice to read that my co-commentary has been enjoyed 👌🏻

Dom O’Brien @thatdomobrien.bsky.social · 02/09/2026

Well, we weren’t aware of a longer version for a long time. All releases in the UK were 100 minutes on VHS (on both the 20/20 Vision and M.I.A releases) and the first budget DVD. So, that meant exposition was reduced and some action/violence was trimmed down.

Despite not being listed on either the packaging or the promo material, I do appear on this release. So, if you end up listening to my commentary on the Guyver: Dark Hero Blu-ray, hopefully you enjoy it. Thank you to the individual who sent this across to me.

Dom O’Brien @thatdomobrien.bsky.social · 20/08/2026

Totally! I'm a tad concerned about it, particularly as I’m not included on the packaging specs for an upcoming release 😂. Likely won’t receive a contributor’s copy either (I’ve heard similar things happening to other people as well). I’m starting to believe they just want free labour now.

000

Dom O’Brien @thatdomobrien.bsky.social · 19/08/2026

I’ve only ever been paid once for Blu-ray work. In all other instances I have only received a contributor's copy or (for one that’s about to happen) receive nothing at all!

I know, the audacity of it! 😂

While no promo material mentions it, I’ve had confirmation from Steve that my commentary track (with The Guyver Geek) is on the new G: DH Blu release. So, my annoying North London accent is now on both of the Guyver physical discs. I can only apologise for being on a lot of Guyver film media 😂😂

Films? Not really. You have Ed in Evil Dead II. TV series, you’ve got the demonic version of Pablo and the mascot from S3. I will say that Edgar in Evil Dead Burn is pretty good 👍🏻

Spanish version of Budget Biomorphs is out soon. It's looking great! I cannot wait to have a copy and put it on my bookshelf (alongside my original English language copy). Despite its flaws (of which there are many), I'm still proud to have my work in physical form on a shelf 👌🏻
