Just made my first post on Substack. Took the whole month, but anyone here that knows me will certainly enjoy reading this. Wanted to pay tribute to "The Proud Family" revival while also calling out the very lazy critiques of it. malcolmrambert.substack.com/p/the-proud-...

"The Proud Family": Using Legacy Responsibly and Giving Credit Where It’s Due

Saying farewell to a legacy sequel series of a childhood favorite by praising an under-discussed element of its entire run, while also noting how doing so is currently rare for “certain” series.

When I was working background design for Hey Arnold I made this handy guide to standardize the front door to the Sunset Arms… but once those off-model drawings are in the wild they breed like roaches. (Enjoy Craig's hilarious, tolerant note.)

A clean ground-level drawing of Arnold's stoop with notes describing exact features:

THE PORTHOLE
•hangs just below molding
•approx 1/2 height of other 1st floor windows

Loo! There are exactly 5 STEPS

Rounded sills are GOOD on Arnold's house!

THE CROWN MOLDING
This is made of rounded shapes!
Interior lines are only to suggest dimension. They DO NOT DEFINE FLAT PLANES!

THE FRONT DOOR
•six planks
•don't make window too complicated

(a post-it note from Craig Bartlett)
Jay-
Thanks for the extremely detailed front-door manifesto. Now how about a whole house? C.B.

It's so funny that the "but what if the film ends up SHIT?" questions that were constantly getting raised about Coyote Vs. ACME ended up meaning nothing. I'm so happy both this and The Day The Earth Blew Up were able to get the proper release they deserved.

Have never seen a design even hinting towards this one in the original shorts, whereas with all the other rogues from this concept art they're obvious reworkings of pre-existing characters (Backslide, 88-Teeth, Hugo, etc.). Might have been an original specific to this show?

It's a shame only 10-15 of those cartoons are visually at a theatrical level, and it's Tonic DNA's stuff mostly (WB fucked up the working relationship w/ Yowza's hand-drawn department, hence why they left after 2 or 3 entries and everything else was tweened). The best looking shorts are gorgeous fr.

Bauza let it slip on IG that they plan on doing more theatrical Looney Tunes (presumably in front of each WBPA feature) and i'm so happy about that. Means if one film underperforms and a short isn't widely seen, they've still got multiple chances to hit.

I wouldn't be shocked if he already DID write it and decides to only release the final two volumes posthumously so he won't have to deal with people complaining about the ending lol.

I don't know who needs to see this, but I found this size chart of Cartoon Network characters from 2003 when I was working at Primal Screen. These modelsheets were important for when we'd do promos or IDs featuring all the diff characters together, like in live action scenarios. #wardsmorguefile

A model sheet featuring many of the Cartoon Network characters all together, with a size chart next to them. Powerpuff Girls, Scooby Doo, The Flintstones and Jetsons, Samurai Jack, etc.

Atsuko Tanaka directed "Growing Pains". Isn't credited on Akira to my knowledge, but she & most of the key animators on that episode were also KA's for just about every Miyazaki film. She's had a hand in a lot of Lupin as well (she animated the car chase in Fuma Conspiracy, for example).

"WORLD'S FINEST" (1997) Batman has never looked better in animation than in the DCAU's prime. Incredible direction by ex-Miyazaki animator Toshihiko Masuda. It's visually closer to a higher budget OVA from the time than it is your average '90s TV cartoon.

If WB had it their way, The Animated Series would've served as an extension of the Tim Burton films (they wanted Burton to EP the show, even!) and NOTHING else. Bruce Timm, Eric Radomski, Paul Dini, Alan Burnett & the rest of the crew ended up giving us something far more substantial than that.

Were 90s kids clamoring for a Batman cartoon with 1930s Art Deco aesthetics? Is that what the market demanded? Or did some really smart creative people have a vision and make a genre-defining hit that sustained 20 years of TV shows? If you want success look for vision, not just metrics.

I swear, Ellison and the way he speaks is THE core argument as to why anti-trust enforcement has to be pushed far back from the current status quo. Like, just saying the quiet part out loud like this (and y'know, getting the Saudis involved) should get you kicked out the room right then and there.

I went as often as I could to watch the orchestra and I happened to film this part while it was still just a board. Before I wasn't sure what direction to take this shot's animation cause the temp music was bare, then I heard those 3 brass stings and it was done. (used my phone's audio!) #TDTEBU

Spielberg came a long way from his "I want a new background for EVERY shot!" suggestions back in the Tiny Toons days. Glad to see his input leaned more and more toward his specialty, the storytelling, as he got involved with more animated productions.

If you're like me and love the Duck Dodgers TV show, you'll be happy to discover that DC was doing tie-in stories for it on a semi-regular basis as the show was airing! Art was primarily handled by Dave Alvarez and my pal @neals.bsky.social. Great cartooning in these!
