Cal Black @thatcalamity.bsky.social · 10/06/2026I wrote a whole book about this. Platonic friendships can be just as fulfilling as romantic ones. Cal Black @thatcalamity.bsky.social · 10/06/2026On sunday we had to say goodbye to my beloved cat/companion/familiar/copilot in life, Bird. She was not only the babiest of cats, frequently sent discord messages, and loved everyone the moment she met them. I've been drifting around since, unable to focus on projects without her supervision. 10130

Cal Black @thatcalamity.bsky.social · 03/05/2026but there will always be exceptions, and I have noticed that the readers who ask for explanations tend to be the louder ones and therefore seem like the majority. All we can do, is our best to reach the readers we're intending to find. There will always be overflow. 110
Cal Black @thatcalamity.bsky.social · 03/05/2026But if we earn the trust of the reader by showing we know what we're doing by telling this story the way we are, the reader is more likely to trust us that the ambiguous ending is the intention... and reflect on what that ambiguity means. 210
Cal Black @thatcalamity.bsky.social · 03/05/2026I think, as an extension of Olivia's point, that in order to produce a satisfying ambiguous ending, the author needs to earn the trust of the reader throughout the book. If we fumble the body of the book, an ambiguous ending will feel like a mistake, or cop out instead of thought-provoking. 250
