Sometimes I get asked to write land acknowledgements for work. Next time someone says the acknowledgement I wrote is too "harsh" on colonizers ill send them this.

Educate themselves about diabetes and GLP-1s (its not a weightloss drug, it is a medicine some people need to live!) Had three good friends make some unfortunate comments about some people "deserving" diabetes yesterday over lunch. I felt myself shut down.

I feel like this remake used her storyline as a metaphor for Trans teen life in trump era, and im not mad it. "I exist!", being outed/bullied in a change room, mother "protecting her child" and wanting her to just go back to how she was. (Im not trans, so my take is not based on lived experience)

Al and crummy sequels has me off the 31in31 horror movie challenge this year. Instead I am trying to read 31 pages of horror a day for Oct (I'm averging higher but 31in31 sounds good). So far I've read @tkingfisher.com M Kliewer and my fav horror author @stephengrahamjones.com
Three books: The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones, A House with Good Bones by T Kingfisher, The Caretaker by Marcus Kliewer. The first book is soft cover, while the second two are hardcover and checked out from the library.

Same with my floors, that stuff is absolute crap. I've been buying boxes of laminate at $40/box to fix it (landlord takes months) and this $40/box stuff is better quality than whatever cheap as crap that stuff is.

@goodtrailcams.bsky.social on a popular bike trail. How many kittens can you spot?

@goodtrailcams.bsky.social here are some baby elks from the south kootenays. We always have an issue where the adults lick our trail cams and they tilt down, but sometimes it's a gift.
Two baby elks looking out of frame. They look much like fawns (tan with spots) but they have darker ears and noses. They are standing on some green understory plants and the adult elk's back legs are in the top left corner.

Nettle fibre update: I finished breaking the nettle down and now I have a container of fibre that needs to be cleaned up and combed. A member of the guild I'm in has been growing and working with flax for the past few years, so her advice has been incredibly helpful.
A rolling pin, an unprocessed nettle with fibre sticking off it, a pile of left over nettle bits and a tubberwear full of fluffy nettle fibreA close up of the nettle fibre. It is a silvery greeny colour, and some parts of fluffy while others are more plant like and curly. There are bits that need to get picked out still.

My friend picked up this mystery fibre from a thrift store for me. Its a colour way I'd have never picked for myself but I couldn't say no to $7 fibre (i think its wool and bamboo with some tinsel?). It was a lot of fun to spin, I think im going to save it for weaving next year.

Rocky Horror Picture Show was the first movie that made me feel not alone in my queerness. It showed me the queer community had room for us freaky lil weirdos who weren't represented elsewhere. I literally cried the first time I watched it. RIP Tim Curry, forever my role model.

Stinging nettle fibre update: I'm calling the retting on this batch done? The gunky stuff is a soft fibre and I started losing it when changing the water (the smell gets bad, just a heads up). Im letting this dry out now before breaking it down more manually.

Inspired by @adriftalchemist.bsky.social to post my berry picking photo. My Nana has a famous blackberry jam recipe that I follow to a T, and it makes everyone in my family and friend group so happy when they receive a jar. I made her this blackberry shawl to thank her for sharing the recipe.

Blackberries are 6.99 for a small package here. Instead I go pick my own and now I can afford to give everyone a jar of blackberry jam this year.

Yeah, I've had kids run at my dog screaming "can we pet your dog?" Then when i say "no, not today" I get such a dirty look from their parents who for some reason think the world is their child's petting zoo.

Final Tour de Fleece tally: 450g not sure about meters. Everything here is from two sheep at the sanctuary where I volunteer. Additionally I finished cleaning and skirting all the fleece from them and have gotten a fair amount of carding done.

When I was putting these large stalks in my largest container, I broke some fibres. I remembered this blog post on Kwakwaka'wakw Nimpkish Nettle Beaters, so I'm going to try to go over them with a rolling pin which will hopefully keep the fibres intact. grantkeddie.com/2025/06/nett...

Now that tour de fleece is over (final tally to come) I'm going to try my hand at nettle fibre. In northern areas where flax was not easy to come by, nettle was a popular alternative. This nettle patch has completed its seed cycle and is in a mowing area, so i'm collecting these 5-6 foot stalks.

A local woodturner made these two bobbins for my Canadian Production Wheel. I may be able to spin on her before tour de fleece is over! (I snagged the wheel at auction in June and the only repairs she needed was her bobbin and a bit of leather that holds the bobbin.

tl;dr I would expect to be able to spin without encountering vm for a few minutes and without encountering lrg vm for quiet a while. I have some "free fibre" that is quiet bad that I plan on using as stuffing for pet toys. If I paid for it and I ran into lots of vm I would probably try returning it

For amount, it depends on the animal it came from. I clean fibre pet sheep who aren't raised for wool, so they tend to be quiet dirty. After my backyard cleaning and carding process, I would say there is a "big" piece every 10-30 min of spinning and maybe small bits (like less than a mm) more often.

So as someone that cleans and preps local fibre, I would say nothing larger than a pinky nail and only shavings and grass. If it is clean properly, even if something like poop or dirt did get missed in the skirting, it should have been washed out. Sometimes a bug will crawl in between stages though.

Tour de fleece: I decided to try spinning Lincoln's fleece and it's delightful so far. His locks were short but they are sticking to each other well. In the picture below he is eatting with Rosie the goat and Lola the skudde.

Btw, I own none of my spinning or carding equipment. I rent it all from the Mission Weavers and Spinners Guild (for the low price of a $35 annual membership fee). If you live in an area with guild, I highly recommend joining. If not for the rental than the community and immense talent.

Tour de fleece: today I am carding Lincoln's wool in the garden. The difference between the cleaned fleece vs the raw wool is satisfying. In the picture below lincoln is waiting to be sheared.

Tour de fleece update: spinning this Suffolk I got from someone moving. It has lots of little bits in it making it a bit annoying to spin, but hoping that when I dye it they look like flecks. When you're learning you can't say no to free fibre

Most of my tour de fleece has been spent processing this fleece from Lincoln at the sanctuary I volunteer at. I've also been spinning fleece from Maggie who also lives at the sanctuary.
