Next Artefacts in Focus article is in production, looking at this rather beautiful wooden rearing cobra in the collection at Bolton Museum. Did I think it would be straightforward? Yes. Did my ADHD brain then find a massive rabbit hole to fall down? Also yes 😐 Anyway, coming soon ...
An ancient Egyptian rearing cobra with a sundisk on its head. It's made of wood, with fragments of gilding remaining around the good and on the sundisk. It's photographed in quarter profile, which highlights the curve in the body and details on the face.

As we run headlong into the autumn here in the northern hemisphere, this is your reminder that you don't need 'good' weather to get good photos. The colder months can bring fog, cloud, or low, raking light, which can add an amazing atmosphere to your photos. #Photography

🌞 The girls have broken up for the summer holidays, which means no more 6.25 a.m. alarm for a few weeks. This makes me so happy I want to ride through the streets on a goose with a jolly smile on my face like Harpocrates here. Photographed for Golden Mummies of Egypt. 📷 © me
Roman-style terracotta figure of Harpocrates riding on the back of a goose. Harpocrates is a child, and is naked except for a conical headdress. He is holding his index finger to his mouth. Traces of white plaster on surface.

🐊 Greywacke statuette of a crocodile, found at Nekhen (Hierakonpolis), one of Egypt's most ancient cities, now in the collection at the @garstangmuseum.bsky.social. More info in alt text. Photographed for the 'Before Egypt' exhibition in 2019. 📷 © me. #WorldCrocDay #AncientEgypt #Egyptology
The crocodile is on a spatulate base which has perforations at each corner at the wider front edge. The snout of the crocodile is broken off and the details of its skin texture are incised into the greenish grey stone. Viewed from above the body describes a sinuous curve with the end of the tail flicking to the right and the legs bent in a walking posture.

It dates to the early Dynastic Period (c.3150 BCE–2686 BCE) and is the only one of its kind found at the city.

Crocodiles were associated with Sobek, a ferocious, yet protective, deity, who guarded Egyptians from the dangers of the Nile.

🏺For #FindsFriday this week, I'm sharing with you an ancient Greek kylix – a wide, shallow cup used for drinking wine – dating to the 6th century BCE and now in the collection at the @garstangmuseum.bsky.social. More info in the alt-text. Photographed in 2023. Photo © me. #AncientGreece
The kylix is wide and shallow with small, D-shaped handles on the sides and a stem base. The outside is painted orange, with the people painted in black, in the classic ancient Greek style. The handles and stem are black. The interior is black with a decorative orange circle in the centre with a lion.

It was found in several pieces and underwent reconstructive conservation in 2023. Areas where the kylix has been reconstructed are clear, as the surface is more matte and the decoration has not been reconstructed.

It measures 29 × 12.3 cm.

For #FindsFriday this week, I'm sharing with you this photo of an ancient Egyptian wooden mallet, worn down by use and the handle smoothed to a shine by human hands. It is testament to the hard work and grind of the ancient Egyptian workforce. Happy #InternationalWorkersDay and #MayDay! Photo © me
A plain mallet with a tall, cylindrical head that has a lot of damage to the surface, and has narrowed particularly around the centre of the head from use. The handle is a little shorter than the head.

Found at Gurob in Egypt, now in the collection at Manchester Museum, it dates to the New Kingdom (c. 1570–1352 BCE).

1/2 For #FindsFriday this week, I'm sharing with you a photo of a Roman-era shroud for a young girl. It was featured in Manchester Museum's Golden Mummies of Egypt exhibition, and it's the subject of my next Artefacts in Focus article, dropping tomorrow. #Egyptology #AncientEgypt #MuseumPhotography
The middle section of the shroud. It's made of linen and covered in painted plaster, although the plaster is damaged in many places. The bulk of the shroud is taken up with a depiction of the girl herself, in typical Roman style. She has a gold necklace made of painted plaster.

🏺A tiny (8 cm) pot found during John Garstang's excavations at the ancient site of Koshtamna in Sudan, seemingly plain until you realise all those marks in the surface were made by straw inclusions in the clay. It's details like that that make me happy ... Photo © me. #FindsFriday #TinyJoys
The vessel is cup shaped with a slightly rounded base. It's rough in texture with no decoration. It's a natural buff colour with some darker patches around the top and down part of the side, caused by the firing process. The marks where the straw inclusions were cover most of the surface. Extra info for the photo: The vessel is several thousand years old and measures only 8 cm. I photographed it for the Garstang Museum of Archaeology's 'Before Egypt' exhibition back in 2019.

🏺 Bronze statuette (11.4 cm) of Harpocrates (Horus the Child), personification of the reborn morning sun. He's recognised by his crown, sidelock-of-youth hair, his finger at his mouth, and ... his complete butt-nakededness. Now at the @garstangmuseum.bsky.social. Photo © me #AncientEgypt #TinyJoys
Harpocrates is in a classic Egyptian striding stance, with his left arm by his side and his right raised to his mouth. He's wearing the 'deshret' crown, in a low conical shape with a long, curved extension coming out the top and a rearing cobra on his forehead. His head is shaved, with the exception of the sidelock, which is a thick, plaited piece of hair on the right side of his head. He's standing on a small, rectangular base with a tenon on the underside.

The amulet is a pale brown colour. He's in a seated position with his hands on his knees, and has a large headdress of a full moon sitting inside a crescent moon. He has some cursive hieroglyphs inscribed down the front of his torso.

Osiris on his throne in the Hall of Judgement. Detail, just a few cm tall, from the Book of the Dead. The papyrus is broken where it was rolled up, and the fragments had slipped inside the glass, so I realigned them in Photoshop tetisheri.co.uk/repairing-pa... #FindsFriday #TinyJoys #AncientEgypt
The papyrus is decorated with line drawings in black ink. Osiris is sitting on a throne, wearing the double crown of Egypt and holding a crook and flail as a symbol of royalty. In front of him is a large lotus flower with deities standing on top, and behind him a papyriform column. Along the top of the papyrus are some hieroglyphs and two rows of seated underworld deities. At the very top is a row of stars.

I do love a Predynastic red-and-buff decorated pot like this. The painted decoration depicts people on a boat, with a standard in the centre. This early Egyptian art is so full of character. Photographed January 2019 for the Before Egypt exhibition by the Garstang Museum of Archaeology. Photo © me.
An oval-shaped ceramic pot with small lug handles. The decoration, in red paint, shows a curved boat in a typical ancient Egyptian style. Two people are on the right of the boat with a tall, curved standard to their left and two rectangular shapes in the centre. Below the boar are horizontal lines representing water. The top third has sustained damage and the decoration is lost.Detail of one of the people with the standard. They're painted in silhouette style, but in an early form of the classic Egyptian stance in profile but with forward-facing shoulders. The standard is a tall pole with two streamers halfway up, and the top resembles two arms curved up over a head.
