I find it strange how often the history of Jews in Europe more broadly is treated as a niche or specialist topic, rather than being part of the main stream of European history. It’s a *choice* to leave Jewish history out of the story.

leeds has a dodgy rep among english people of a certain generation but these days it is probably the most inoffensive, generic mid sized city in the entire country

chatting with a barista who used to au pair for a family in yorkshire, she said her hosts warned her never to go to leeds because it was dangerous and I just straight up burst out laughing

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

my students actually already brought up the case in both of my classes, it's been the main topic of discussion among my friends. I don't think men really realise how much women have been talking about it with each other this week and how heavy it weighs on us, particularly those in higher ed.

the work of Liza Blake and the bibliography of early modern asexualities which she co edited should be helpful. www.academia.edu/44374597/A_B...

if your student is interested in pursuing it further then Christina of Markyate and Margery Kemke would be two potentially generative primary sources. there's very little relevant secondary scholarship for the Middle Ages but some good stuff that has been published on early modern asexualities.

im a little skeptical of ace readings of medieval celibacy purely because the sources usually frame it as an active practice struggle over/mastery of desire rather than *absence* of desire. the celibate/virgin as identity category analogous to asexuality may have some mileage to it

it turns out that even a pre-industrial society that supposedly lives in woo woo harmony with its natural environs can still get royally fucked over by natural climatic change completely outside of its control!!

maybe if certain people read more of the boring economic history scholarship that they brag about not engaging with, they'd know about cute things like the Little Ice Age and the great famine of 1315-18 😊

tho @josserme.bsky.social is very correct in pointing out that drawing out the interdependence between micro crunchy and macro state capacity is a good way to get people to buy in on an emotional as well as rational political level bsky.app/profile/joss...

no point in convincing people to be crunchy on an individual level if you can't get them to buy into the macro politics that make it possible.

and all of that is in turn the product of the Nasty Big State, elite ivory tower academics, taxation, red tape etc, all kinds of things that a lot of people hate and don't really understand.

the urban green space near you where you get to smell the roses and watch the birds is the product of ongoing city/state/federal/EU etc investment, rigidly enforced restrictions on greenfield development, and highly specialised expertise in botany/ecology/land management.

completely uneducated vibes based opinion here but I'm wondering if harsher penalties on public indecency in much of the US kinda stopped it being as prevalent a cultural practice?

oh there's definitely so much anime out there that is deeply aesthetically and philosophically rich and engages in conversation with both japanese and european artistic traditions, but Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (1995) is probably not one of them

i'm also a hypocrite because i have literally watched several hundred hours worth of japanese mecha anime in this year alone, but i guess at least i'm not trying to make a statement about problematising the canon with it
