I was an engineer in the Navy: a mechanic specializing on jet engines. But 5 days after 9/11, when we arrived in Iraq, I was handed a gun (after a couple days of training with the Navy SEALs) and told to board hostile vessels. We risked everything because we had do. We didn't "opt out". 🫡 ⚓

My first time in Japan, I visited the Nagasaki peace park & A-bomb memorial: countries from all over the world donated stunning marble statues. The older generation stared at us like we were responsible for the carnage. I understand their pain and sympathize for their hate.
