In my ttrpg campaign today: my character proved himself the only one in the group worthy of drawing an artifact-level sentient holy avenger blade, a +5 weapon with a number of powers and abilities. This weapon can kill an evil god. And I have no Longsword proficiency. And I'm a psion. Doh.

And... I wasn't totally in the wrong, but I wasn't totally right, either. There were sides to the story I didn't see and didn't try to see until after I lashed out, and that wasn't cool of me. So I wanted to organize my thoughts and remind myself of some bits of wisdom and experience I've learned.

So why am I saying all this? I guess... in part it's venting. Needed to express thoughts stuck in my head somewhere, and this just became the best outlet. But also because I had a moment recently in the past few days with family that hit on my anxieties of being forgotten / not being "good enough".

And that includes socially. I fear being used by fair weather friends or forgotten when I'm used up. And those are legitimate concerns sometimes, sure. SOMETIMES. But it's also only focusing on my side of a story involving both me and the other people involved. Not always fair to them.

And everyone has different levels of energy and limitations and even different thresholds for exhaustion for different activities. Comparing myself to others isn't just illogical, it's unfair to them and me. We all have our limitations and areas to grow.

I used to believe I could always be trying harder or doing more or working better at anything I do. Apparently according to my therapist that's a common feeling for people who have ADHD and I'm a textbook case. The truth is that a person only has so much to give before they burn out.

I guess I've always felt... inadaquate by some sort of cold, arbitrary goalposts, either someone else's or just some unspoken universal metrics it feels like only I'm failing to measure up to. It's dumb and illogical. Took me forever to realize that there's no real light at the end of THAT tunnel.

So trying to reach out in College, trying to learn how to "people" was perilous waters, fraught with social danger and mishaps. But I came out of it feeling like I could at least talk to people. Growing through a trial by fire, I guess?

I tried to get to know others as a kid, but it wasn't easy. I was the strange weirdo, but not the "good" kind of strange weirdo who made people laugh and acted like the jester of the high school classroom. I was the shy kid, always reading and stuttered when I talked and never knew what to say.

I didn't really understand other people when I was a child. I always felt like they were like ineffable aliens unless it was like, my parents or people I was close with. Nearly every friend I had before College was someone who was friends with A Certain Someone Else first.

I learned early on in College that no one, or almost no one, was going to reach out to me or try to make friends with me. If I wanted to not be lonely, I had to teach myself to be social, to reach out to others, and to try to understand them. There. Was. A. Learning. Curve.

But it was also when I first met a lot of people who would become dear friends of mine to this day. Hell, it's why I'm a furry, and led to me meeting the love of my life and to write a ton of stories I HOPE people were aroused but also inspired by.

I hurt people who didn't deserve it. Made and lost new friends. Developed a (mostly unfair) campus-wide reputation for tearing the clothing off of female professors (it was ONE time, and she was choking and freaking out and asked for help and I panicked). I have a lotta regrets.

Instead of doing my own thing and growing into my own person, I got into almost all the same things they did. Became the "kid brother", the tag-along, the "bonus prize". It wasn't until College, thrust onto my own away from everyone I knew and loved, that I finally grew out of it.

I ended up comparing myself to them, trying to "measure up" and usually failing... because I was younger and usually less developed than them. It was never realistic for me to measure up. But I let myself define myself by a stupid one-sided thing that became a viscious cycle.

And it IS a new manifestation of old anxieties. Growing up as a child I was always in the shadows of someone else. Someone who felt stronger and smarter and more charismatic and cooler than me, making me feel like nothing without even intending to. It's just that everyone paid attention to them.

The twisted part of it is, I LIKE organizing things. Setting up events, planning parties, vacations, DnD campaigns, etc. I didn't always, but I grew to enjoy doing it more. But it came with it this stupid new manifestation of old anxieties that sometimes poisons it for me. A feeling of "being used".

It's one of my bigger insecurities these days, and I hate it. It's not fair to other people and it serves as a spawning ground for thoughts that drive me to depression. And I have enough stuff about politics and the world to do that as it is. I don't need more.

There's a part of myself, that I hate but sometimes feel like I need, that's constantly telling me things like "people only tolerate you when you do all the work to organize things" or "people say they like you to your face but secretly hate you, or easily forget about you." Or that they use me.

I'm just... tired of trying to be nice and accomidating and feeling like people walk all over me because of it. I'm tired of feeling like an afterthought or ignored. I'm tired of being the one who tries to mediate, or find compromise, or who just goes along with what other people want to keep peace.
