“I told the doctors it hurts when I walk, and it hurts when I talk, and it hurts when I breathe,” Si said. “And do you know what they told me?”
“Oh God,” Noah said, “let me guess: do more PT.”
“They said if it hurts when you do that stuff, don’t do it anymore.”

Somehow, Noah bullied me out to the car. It didn’t matter that he was currently wearing an eye shadow he’d told me—twice—was called Bordello Pink. It didn’t matter that his earring today was a tiny Tinkerbell that swung on a gold chain. It didn’t even matter that he weighed close to half what I did and, on a good day, I probably could have lifted him over my head.

Karli said a brief prayer and then told him, God has just plucked another wild rose, sweetheart, which in Tean’s opinion sounded a little too much like what Dolly Parton might have said. And he refused to let his brain think about alternate meanings for plucking a rose, which told him he’d been spending way too much time with Jem.
