Even the shallowest puddle on a city street can become a scrying mirror. For this is the power of the witch – she refuses the false polarity of magical and mundane. All and everything may hold wonder. All and everything may be a tool of her witchery. – #EmilyCBanting, 1982 #WitchSky

There are stretches of place we instinctively feel are haunted. Long before we hear the story of phantom grey lady or discarnate chanting of skipping rhymes, we know to walk them would be to tread ghost soil. Our psychic skin itches with spectral anticipation. – #CJosiffe #Ghosts

One of the true hidden jewels of Oslo. Not difficult to get to, but it's usually closed unless for services or special occasions. Although heavily restored, it is one of the best surviving examples of Norwegian medieval architecture.

We walk streets we know to be ghost-soaked and our journey becomes the joy of a shivering story. We walk obviously haunted streets in the hope of spectral encounter. There is an ache for the strange and disruptive up until the moment it arrives to scratch our psychic skin. – #CJosiffe

Some in Hookland still have headaches from last night's festival of Safe Return.
October 13th – The Festival of Safe Return
The company of Merchant Sailors, a force powerful in the 16th and 17th centuries
when it came to seafaring and the governance of Ashcourt, were once known as the
Guild and Fraternity of John the Baptist. Those who believe the Guild came out of the
dissolution of the Knights Templar on Friday October 13th, 1307 may see
confirmation in the fact the Merchant Sailors are recorded as celebrating The Festival
of Safe Return at least as early as 1525. A parade of burning torches and lanterns will
snake down from the Church of St. John-atte-Bower which used to be outside of
Ashcourt, all the way down to the docks where a beacon fire is lit – an event which
causes dozens of ships in the Ashcourt Sound to respond by lighting their own
beacons, making a chain of light out into the sea, a chain meant to symbolise safe
return for all those still lost across the water. As with so many these days, the council
feels the need to supplement proceedings with a firework display.

We make wild pilgrimage. Approach feral churches in green communion, feel the rub of primitive ritual against our bones. Our faith is fierce, our faith is in the land. We are not summoned by bells, but by a congregation of spirits abiding at the edge of memory. – #DAKilroy, 1982

The rapid abandonment of Bennewith House by both the nuns and the orphans left in their dubious care, continues to generate much speculation. Phrases such as ‘mass possession’ and ‘group hysteria’ are commonly used. The gates remain locked, the buildings hollowed and left to rot.

Happy weekend! Here’s a 3,500 year-old Minoan clay flask decorated with a wide-eyed octopus! 🐙❤️ From Palaikastro, Crete. Heraklion Archaeological Museum 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a frontal view of a clay flask with warm-yellow coloured slip with black hand painted decoration depicting an octopus. The octopus is swimming diagonally with eight writhing, sucker-lined arms covering the surface of the flask. It stares out at the viewer with wide, almost cartoon-like eyes. Additional black painted motifs include sea urchins, tritons, small rocks and seaweed. Minoan decoration depicting sea motifs is known by scholars as the 'Marine Style'. The flask measures 27 cm (about 10.5 inches) in height. It has a short spout at the top with a small loop handle at either side and a small base so that it can stand upright.

“Its shape is somewhat unusual, constructed by slipping together, while still leather hard (clay that is not quite dry), two shallow plates which had been made on a fast spinning potter’s wheel and with highly refined clay. The circular bases of these shallow plates are still visible in the center of both sides of the flask” (Smart History article “Octopus Vase” by Dr Senta German https://smarthistory.org/octopus-vase/)

The flask was excavated in 1903 at a Bronze Age settlement site at Palaikastro. The excavations between 1902 and 1906, were run by R. Bosanquet and R.M. Dawkins from the British School of Athens. The flask is part of the collections at Heraklion Archaeological Museum, Heraklion, Crete.

Folklore likes to travel ... #FolkloreThursday
Approached with politeness and genuine curiosity, people usually want to talk about their folklore. To represent for their locality through it. Especially when they have personal, intimate experience with it. Within us is a hardwired urge to share and transmit its stories. Folklore likes to travel – to possess and jump from person to person so it can walk further, flourish in new soil – and it has conditioned us from the first fires to enable this in acts of communal storytelling.
