hi!! thanks @cyborggoddess.bsky.social! i think we were followers on the other site. it’s nice to think that similar things are possible here.

Thank you! Doubly useful as I think about systems of accountability in schools (specifically assessment and device monitoring) and how these fit into the conversation around connections and (pedagogical) relationships, and the types of connection we're making time and space for.

It's also very nice to be able to deepen my own critiques as I write up the PhD, while also making new connections and creating new resonances that will extend well beyond submission. (Now I need to read Lindemann's book but I will wait until post-submission...)

contrast to 'cognitive offloading' which feels increasingly empty and which does not really address what's at stake. Valuing (and protection) forms of attention and forms of attentiveness are absolutely vital to living better, with each other, especially in education. Well worth a listen!

So refreshing to hear critiques of (gen) AI that start from the idea of interdependence. 'Cognitive offloading' may be a concern, but it is one that can be dealt with via 'critical intervention' at the level of the individual. I shy away from this idea, especially as it continues to circulate

And while I appreciate that Summerhall is a nice Fringe venue, the stories of local artists and their livelihoods is a bit more of interest one would think.

To think that there is nothing to be learned and innovated on from the safety practices of other industries is lunacy. AI tools are power. They are not magical or exempt from safety practices that work for other complex systems. Governing AI requires disenchantment; break the spell.

i think it's mostly that the biggest advocates of gen ai are the ones least interesting in writing for writing's sake -- or really for any other reason but accumulation of capital

Ted Palenski @tedpal.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
we can value all of things things separately. writing is a very flexible technology. it's so odd to me that we have to writhe and contort ourselves to adjust teaching and learning in the 'age of ai' when ai is supposed to be some magically flexible technology.

bit of a slip in the original headline, but I prefer it -- "Writing isn't as important as we think": yes, thinking is more important (as a necessary precondition for writing)

This can't be said enough. While I of course agree with critiques of garbage gen AI, the problems run much deeper. There is no 'human in the loop' when we broaden the lens on what automation is

trying to optimise for 'academic benefits' (i.e. test scores) via class size seems like a dystopian exercise in control. ugh. surely we can imagine other benefits to smaller class sizes? even if they aren't *gasp* economically beneficial in the very short term?

Ted Palenski @tedpal.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
TBH these high-level 'use' statistics, where the terms are intentionally under-defined, are only useful as forms of marketing for similarly under-specified uses cases. They seem to worsen structural problems by further shifting the responsibility for said problems onto individuals w/ the least power

I would really like orgs to collectively think about what kinds of time they need to meet their medium and long-term goals. For orgs with social purposes (e.g. schools, unis, care facilities) it would be nice to shift the focus from saving time to *making* time and then see what tech might do
100
Ted Palenski @tedpal.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
This seems especially relevant when the discourse is all about efficiency and narrow views of saving time. This is all backwards IMO, especially as I near the end of the PhD. Time is imagined to be some sort of tradeable resource: shaving off a minute here or there leads to transformation. Magic!

(6) What forms of experience and expertise become less valued as a result? And the question that nobody seems to care about: (7) What are the long-term effects of the de- and re-valuation?

Ted Palenski @tedpal.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
It's even worse when it comes to schools. So many Qs: (1) What is 'AI'? (2) What does 'use' mean in terms of frequency? (3) ... in terms of specific tasks? (4) How is 'use' distributed across an organisation? (5) What are possible secondary effects of such 'use' in workflows within organisations?
