my message to amateur sega fans would be "you read blake harris' book once and still take ultimate history of video games vol 1 as gospel, i'm looking through john harrison's sonic retro posts for extra translations he didn't put already on MD shock, we are not the same"

there's an amazing archived blog by one of AM5's managers that transribes an old university talk he did about sega, with post-script interjects about the company culture one i think lots about is when he basically says "if your project proposal had a 'first ever' in it you got greenlit immediately"

they also had much lower scale ambitions in opening their own theme park arcade locations (only signing wonder eggs on a shorter lease, launching smaller namco wonderparks/stations in europe, making the one big purchase of aladdin's castle in the US), whilst sega rushed out ahead and burned far more

AMOA 2001 was also the North American debut (and probably ONLY sighting) of Boong-Ga Boong-Ga and thankfully I got proof. I did not try it. Details in ALT caption.
Boong-Ga Boong-Ga (Korean: 붕가 붕가, Japanese: 開ウン!ケダモノ占い), sometimes advertised in English as Spank 'em, is an arcade game developed by a South Korean company, Taff System. It is the first arcade game to simulate kanchō—a popular prank in Japan and Korea where the victim is poked with two fingers in the anus unbeknownst to the victim. ... While an initial contract was made for distribution of 200 units in Japan, only 5 units were ever actually distributed in the country. [Source: Wikipedia]

Interestingly, this version has a large "whack-a-mole" hammer attached to it. Was the game adapted for the US by making players spank the ass instead of poking it with your finger? Hmm.

go to cleethorpes on the train, walk out the station into the massive arcade right in front of its exit, and if what i heard is true (supported by this recent photo off google maps), it should still be there down some stairs on the left :) i'm told they've kept a pair of outrun 2 SPs as well

by all common sense this should've disappeared years ago, but to see it outlasting more common 90s stuff that another location near it had (time crisis 2, manx TT etc) is quite something (how have they even managed to keep the H1 board - only ever used on this and a fish medal game - still alive??)

photo of the interior of a shop where a strip of floor between piles of rolls of fabric and pallets against a wall with fabric rolls stood on them reveals a gray carpet decorated with small white, red, black, and blue triangles and a big alternating motif of the Sega logo and Sonic the Hedgehog
