A Butterbutt Fly for #flyday, Belvosia borealis, a Tachinid that parasitizes Ceratomia hawk moths. #insects #diptera #gardening 🌱 #bugsky

A large bristly black fly with two prominent yellow bands on the end of its abdomen sits on a passiflora leaf.

Another view of the Butterbutt fly from the butt end. The yellow bands on the abdomen have a greenish iridescence and a row of black spiky bristles between them, also the fly has yellow feet which I think are kinda cute for some reason. Oklahoma Northern Crosstimbers ecoregion 29a.

I’ve never played Assassin’s Creed, but I imagine this is the vibe. (Promachus rufipes robberfly with bumblebee prey.) #bugsky #insects #diptera #accidentalrenaissance

Large fly with wings folded over its long body like a cloak, facing a wall with a black and yellow bumble bee belly up at its mercy, with the late evening sun casting dramatic shadows against the wall and providing a Tuscan color palette. There is a long diagonal crack in the wall that originally confused me - it’s not part of either bug’s anatomy.

Friday #Flyday! Here's a romantic pair of ambush bugs (Phymata sp.) on a dinner date. But check out the fly's abdomen. See it? The dark-light patches are opposite on the left vs. right sides. Cool mutation? Gynandromorph? Just a fancy fly? @flygirlnhm.bsky.social @bertonemyia.bsky.social #BugSky 🐙🌿

A macro photo of a pair of ambush bugs, yellow with brownish patches, feeding on a black and white fly they have caught in a yellow flower. The fly's abdomen shows an unusual pattern; the light and dark patches mirror each other on the left vs. right sides of the midline, that is, an area that's dark on the left is light on the right, and vice-versa.
