Visible skill: writing good dialogue for a comic Invisible skill: writing good dialogue that’s 1) succinct & uses words short enough to fit inside speech bubbles, 2) in few enough bubbles that won’t cover up the art too much, 3) leads the eye thru the art and 4) still makes complete narrative sense

An illustrated neon colored hand holds up a smartphone, surrounded in little zaps of lightning. It says June 1 -5 Phone zap for Lorette Pierre. Details: bit.ly/Loretta1yrAn illustration of Loretta Pierre, a woman with long dark hair who is smiling gently, and has a little mole on the corner of her chin. The post says Loretta Pierre is a criminalized survivor and politicized prisoner who was denied parole for the 15th time in January 2026 - more than any woman in Mississippi history! Yesterday I went to CVS and when the machine started printing the receipt, I thought, “life is long like a CVS receipt” (a Cheekface lyric). I thought it several times, because it took so long to print the receipt out, because the receipt was so long. Like life.

First up we have two super cool designs from Chicago Cartoonist @tea-ddie.bsky.social ! I am a little too obsessed with the red and black tie dye. Check out the store for all the style and color options.
Two shirts with art by Teddie Bernard. The words "Pressure the Oppressors" are crumbling under a falling anvil. The subtitle of the design is "Free the Mississippi Five!" One shirt is white with black baseball sleeves. The other is black and red tie dye.Two shirts with art by Teddie Bernard. Bunches of fluffy pink and green flowers are interspersed with the words "Free Them All" and "Free the Mississippi Five." The shirts are a navy tank top and a pink tee shirt.

Part of what I enjoy about creating time period specific work is the research about historical dress. While I am by no means aiming for full historical accuracy, it's a fun challenge to aim to costume characters based in specific times. This graphic novel takes place in the early 1950s.

Last year, I published my first full-length graphic novel, Ballyhoo (Book One). Working on book two now. Here is concept art for some of the characters in upcoming chapters: Gina LaRue, Kit Holiday, and Oretta Adams.
Illustration of Gina LaRue. She is a tall, slim woman in a stripped dress with a dramatic attitude. Art of Kit Holiday. She is a medium height woman, medium length brown hair, almost bland in her appearance. Illustration of Oretta Adams. She wears a pink skirt suit that she looks dreadfully uncomfortable in.

Hey all! I'm Teddie—a queer, Chicago-based cartoonist and artist. Will be occasionally posting my art here. Here's a spread of comics from my graphic novel Ballyhoo where our lead character stumbles her way into the lesbian bar "The Lilac."
