Howdy folks! Here's our writeup on the DDoS from last month: blog.xkeeper.net/the-cutting-... Thanks for your patience while we worked to get this out!

Someone also posted this to our forums as well! Here's our article on what was known before this prototype was released! Most of it appears to be in the ROM. tcrf.net/Prerelease:B... bsky.app/profile/fact...
https://archive.org/details/project-dream-snes_202609

Today, I’m releasing the SNES proof-of-concept alpha of Project Dream, the proto-type that would go on to become Banjo-Kazooie.

I’ve held on to this for years, it was fun to have something that only a handful of people had, and as I am several people removed from how it got out of Rare to begin with, I didn’t want to risk that it could somehow get someone else in trouble, (so how I got it is a story I don’t plan to share.) I will just say that I got it from someone who got it from someone, who got it from somewhere.

But with the current state of the industry and Microsoft's current heartless gutting and mismanagement of Rare and other companies it controls, plus with how long it's been, I feel it's more important to make sure this is properly preserved, and the ROM dissected by people with far more knowledge on how to do such things.

I hope by releasing this, that it also inspires other people to release what they have as well. I know the Twelve Tales Conker 64 prototype is out there somewhere, but sadly, this is the only thing that I have.

There is little joy left in the industry, as it relentlessly marches towards AI, layoffs, l anti-preservation and ownership tactics, and, in Microsoft’s case, the support and approval of literal genocide in Gaza.

Let’s get the last beautiful things hiding on our hard drives out there for everyone. That's all we have left.

Please delete Microsoft and Sony from your lives, install Linux, boycott Switch Game Key Cards and buy Nintendo Switch 2 titles that still come with the full game on the cartridge. Your dollar is the only thing that counts in our late stage capitalist hellscape.

The attached zip contains a .bin file of the raw dump, and then the same file renamed to a .sfc to work in emulators, as well as this text file.
[...some text omitted for limit reasons...]
Be blessed, and love each other.

Signed,

I regret to inform you that they're at it again, pivoting to a new method. While Cloudflare mitigated most of the requests, at this scale, even 1% is enough to cause a disruption. We've adjusted the firewall rules some to hopefully maintain smooth service for real users. Thanks for your patience!

Our attacker finally seems to have learned that our sister wiki, Data Crystal, exists, and pointed their cannon at it. Data Crystal is now behind Cloudflare as well. For TCRF updates, we haven't seen any outage issues since swapping to Cloudflare, and more VPNs should be allowed as well.

As far as the DDoS situation goes, our host is still seeing attack traffic to our old (public) IP address, but our server is happily serving pages behind Cloudflare and our dashboard suggests things are going well :) In the next few days, we'll try to have a post-mortem report on what happened.

It seems that our friend began targeting our backup server and knocked it offline again. Well, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, so welcome to round four!

I set up a backup backup server and somehow even that one gets DDoSed, neat! This person is very persistent.

Fortunately, so am I. So, welcome to round four! Hopefully this time we'll be up for more than a few hours.

We'll keep working to get things back online. See you soon!

Hello from Fastly! Linode has informed us that the DDoS against both our main server and our backup server is still ongoing.

So, now we have a backup backup server. :^)

While we can't directly mitigate the current attack — that's Linode's job (tugging collar) — we're doing what we can to work around it.

They have also now confirmed that the DDoS attack traffic targeting your Linode IP has not returned to safe levels since its initial onset, which occurred about an hour prior (August 27 around 10:35pm ET) to you opening this ticket.

Since the volume of the traffic is still high at this time, the DDoS mitigation block remains in place and will be removed automatically once the traffic to the IP returns to acceptable levels.

Update from Linode... we're still waiting for the attack to subside. There's nothing we can do. We do have all of the files and data backed up, and can migrate if it comes down to it.
Unfortunately, Cloud Firewall wouldn't help in this specific case, since the block is happening further upstream, before traffic even reaches your Linode's own firewall rules. The most reliable path here is letting the automated mitigation run its course, it's specifically designed to lift once the attack traffic settles, and that's the resolution we'd recommend standing by for.

We're actively monitoring the situation on our end and will let you know as soon as we see things stabilize.

While we wait on the DDoS mitigation to end (there's nothing we can do but wait), we've stood up a temporary landing page with an explanation of what's going on. Hope to see you again soon! tcrf.net

Server offline

Welcome to The Cutting Room Floor, a wiki about cut, unused, and left over content in video games. Unfortunately, our server is currently offline due to a DDoS attack.

We'll be back as soon as possible; the server is online and healthy, but traffic to it has been blocked until the DDoS subsides.

For updates, check @tcrf.net on Bluesky. Unfortunately, we're no strangers to scrapers/AI bots and DDoS traffic...

In the mean time, consider checking out our Discord server, or support us via Patreon or Ko-fi.
This is all really stupid

This DDoS seems to have been triggered by someone using Claude Code and getting banned from the site for it, intentionally evading that ban to make up a fake story about their LLM wiping their entire OS, and then firing off multiple abuse reports to our host.

It may not surprise you that this guy has some interesting thoughts on consent, or that he has multiple blog posts in which he brags about poisoning LLMs to win championships or flooding a social network with spam to give himself 1,000,000 followers.

Why are AI people always like this.

— X, TCRF operator

Linode got back to us, and unfortunately it looks like it was what we suspected: another DDoS attack started and an automatic mitigation kicked in. Hopefully things will be back to normal soon!
Thank you for your patience while we investigated this.

We confirmed that an automated mitigation block targeting incoming TCP port 443 traffic was triggered at the router level in response to the recent DDoS activity against your IP (198.58.122.110).

Because this block is managed by our automated DDoS defense system, we do not have a specific ETA for its manual removal. However, once the DDoS event subsides and attack traffic is clear, the system will automatically remove the block and restore normal HTTPS traffic.

We are actively monitoring the situation on our end to ensure connectivity is restored as soon as traffic conditions stabilize. Please let us know if you have any additional questions in the meantime.

A few people have wanted to know how this works: the mechanism is pretty simple. The site checks if your browser says it's coming from one of these sites. If so, you get the "AI loser" page. The link on the page strips out the "utm_source" parameter and referrer, so you only see it once.
A screenshot of PHP code that checks for a "utm_source" parameter of "chatgpt.com" or "copilot.com", and also checks for a referer matching chatgpt, perplexity AI, copilot, claude, and gemini. if any check matches, you are considered an AI loser

Happy birthday, little fella. tcrf.net/Nintendo_DS tcrf.net/Prerelease:N...
Nintendo's first Dual-Screen platform, this third pillar happily coexisted with both its predecessor in the Game Boy line and its competitor from Sony by immediately monopolizing practically the entire handheld space. Known early in development as the Nitro System - a name which survives through the line's serial code, NTR - and later the City Boy, its intuitive touch-screen control, strong third-party support, and low-cost high-capacity game cards quickly resulted in it becoming the most successful handheld platform in history.

And it prints money!
