Nightmare Thoughts.
“It's safe to come out now, sweetie” dad said reassuringly, his blue eyes shining at me through the gap in the bedroom door. He's been saying that for hours, but it doesn't change the fact that my dad's eyes are green.

Geophysicist & space physicist Marcia Neugebauer made the first direct solar wind measurements via instruments on the Mariner 2 spacecraft. She developed instruments used on Earth-orbiting satellites, Apollo lunar experiments & the Giotto mission to Halley’s Comet. Born #OTD in 1932. #WomenInSTEM
A black-and-white historical photograph of pioneering geophysicist and space physicist Marcia Neugebauer (born September 27, 1932) working at her desk during the mid-20th century. Sitting in an office setting, she leans forward slightly over her desk, looking directly at the camera with a calm, intelligent, and focused expression. She has short, bobbed light hair and wears a short-sleeved, collared white button-up blouse adorned with subtle vertical embroidered details down the front. In her right hand, she holds a pencil over large documents and charts with plotted scientific data curves spread out on the desk before her. To her right sits a large, vintage mechanical calculating machine with columns of buttons, characteristic of the 1960s computing era. The background features window blinds and office storage, creating an environment of rigorous research. The image captures the historical significance of a trailblazing woman in STEM whose work with these charts and calculations would confirm the existence of the solar wind via the Mariner 2 spacecraft.

Tonight's Waxing Gibbous Moon as it rises above the eastern horizon just before sunset. At 99.6% illumination it appears full to the naked eye but still has a few hours before that happens. In about an hour there will be another bright spot rising above the eastern horizon. That will be Saturn. 1/2

In all the grandiose discussion about colonising Mars, I don't see much about how the soil is poisonous to us. This was only discovered in 2008. It contains perchlorates, which are environmental toxins here on Earth. Any human contact with Mars dust? Super-bad news in the long run. 1/

Her nightmares got worse, so I built a diving suit to explore the restless ocean of her dreams.

I thought it would be black and full of monsters, like stepping through the gasoline rainbow on top of a puddle and entering a world of dark reflections and broken colours.

I was wrong.

Her dream was white and endless, a world so vast and bright and empty that nothing could hide.

It was there, at the bottom of the nightmare, I learned that terror is not meeting a monster in the dark.

It is meeting ourselves in the light.

A black-and-white studio portrait of American astronomer Mary Watson Whitney (1847–1921), who published 102 scientific papers and advanced women’s integration into professional astrophysical networks. Her graying hair is pinned up elegantly away from her face, revealing a calm, dignified, and intelligent expression with light eyes looking directly at the camera. She is dressed in a dark, structured high-collared Victorian blouse with a contrasting lighter panel adorned with delicate lace or vertical detailing down the center. The composition is a classic vignette portrait, with her lower torso softly fading out into a dark, textured background. The overall mood is serious and professional, reflecting her historical significance as a foundational STEM pioneer, a founding member of the American Astronomical Society, and a trailblazing mentor for early female scientists.A stunning black-and-white historical photograph from circa 1877 showcases pioneer astronomers Maria Mitchell (1818–1889) and Mary Watson Whitney (1847–1921) working inside the wooden dome of the Vassar College Observatory. Captured by photographers the Vail Brothers of Poughkeepsie, the framed composition peers into the workspace. Mitchell sits gracefully on a wooden chair to the left, wearing a long dark dress with a fringed shawl, her grey hair pulled back, staring forward with a serious, resolute expression. To the right, her brilliant student and successor Whitney stands leaning on a tall wooden library ladder. She wears a structured, bustled dark gown of the Victorian era, looking down thoughtfully with her chin resting in her hand. Dominating the center of the frame is the historic refractor telescope, angled upwards toward the ribbed roof of the observatory dome. The mood is dignified, intellectual, and quiet, capturing a vital historical moment in women’s higher academic education and early observational astronomy.
