HUGE NEWS: Today, Mayor Mamdani introduced the POWER Act, giving New Yorkers a way to hold companies accountable for unfair & abusive business practices. This was one of the key recommendations in our Affordable NYC Now roadmap w/@protectborrowers.bsky.social. This is what policy impact looks like!
Graphic with The Century Foundation and Protect Borrowers logos above a New York Times headline reading ‘Mamdani Backs Bill to Let Consumers Sue Over Unfair Business Practices.’ The headline says the proposed legislation would allow nonprofits, including tenants’ unions, to sue companies directly. Text at top reads ‘Making NYC Affordable Now.Graphic featuring a photo of a smiling delivery worker wearing a helmet and backpack, overlaid with a quote from TCF Senior Fellow Lorelei Salas: ‘At a moment when the federal government is retreating from its responsibility to protect consumers and workers, New York City is moving in the opposite direction. NEW: The Senate Banking Democrats' Trumpflation Tracker is putting the squeeze on working families into perspective. It includes our research. We found that for every $1 in additional income families gained since 2022, 52¢ was eaten up by debt: senatebankingdemocrats.substack.com/p/new-warren...
Trumpflation Tracker. Dashboard showing rising costs and economic pressures since December 2024. Cumulative inflation is 5.2%, costing the average household about $3,388; real wage growth is down 0.7%; and the 30-year mortgage rate is 7.6%, costing a typical household $4,330 more per year. Average monthly job growth has fallen from 328,500 total payroll jobs and 289,900 private payroll jobs in 2021–2024 to 38,000 and 48,300, respectively, since January 2025. Household debt has increased by $56 billion from Q1 2025 to Q2 2026. The cost of Trump’s broken promise to cap credit card interest rates is $94.9 billion. Fifty-two cents of each additional dollar of income is going to household debt. Since December 2024, costs have risen 12.7% for electricity, 5.1% for rent, 43.7% for gasoline, 3.7% for groceries, 7.6% for child care, and 14.6% for health care.”

Debt is a worker power issue. When you can't afford a minute without your paycheck, you can't leave a bad job, negotiate a raise, or take a risk on a better one. We asked @warren.senate.gov to react to our findings about this debt with @protectborrowers.bsky.social👇

Workers are earning more. But more than half of those income gains are being swallowed by debt. For the typical worker, 52¢ of every $1 of income growth went to debt payments.

The Federal Reserve raised interest rates today. But higher rates won’t reopen the Strait of Hormuz, lower energy costs, or reverse tariffs—the real drivers of inflation.

Before you fire up the grill this Memorial Day weekend, learn about how Trump’s tariffs are jacking up the cost of the corn and bratwurst on your plate. (Spoiler: you’ll probably have to shell out more than you budgeted for your cookout.)
Infographic titled "Grilling Americans' Wallets: Price Hikes on Popular Memorial Day Staples," published by The Century Foundation and Groundwork Collaborative. A table compares 2025 and 2026 prices for 13 common Memorial Day items. Yellow corn (6 ears) saw the steepest increase at 98%, rising from $2.97 to $5.90. Apple pie (store bakery) increased 37% to $7.62. Johnsonville Bratwursts rose 28% to $4.79. Key lime pie (store bakery) increased 24% to $10.99. Tomatoes, ground beef (1lb), and disposable plasticware each increased around 20%. Martin's Rolls, iceberg lettuce, seedless watermelon (15lb), Coca-Cola (1 case), Ketchup (Kraft Heinz), and hot dogs (Kraft Beef) rose between 12% and 19%. The footer reads: "For more common summer items and methodology, visit go.tcf.org/MemorialDay."
